Newspaper Page TextPage 6 - The Wiregrass Farmer, December 31, 2008 Rooks takes 2nd at FFA floral design Turner County Middle School FFA member Flannah Rooks recently won second place at the Area Five FFA Floral Design Career Development Event. The event was held at ABAC in Tifton, Georgia in September. Rooks will compete for state honors at the Georgia State Floral Design CDE on March 21, 2009 at the FFA/FCCLA Center in Covington, Georgia. The Floral Design Career Development Event allows stu dents to utilize the principles and elements of design. Each student makes two floral arrangements and answers questions by a panel of judges concerning floral design princi ples. Students use the princi ples of balance, proportion and scale, focal point, emphasis, rhythm, harmony and unity, and the technique of flower placement to create their designs. Rook,s a 7th grader, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rooks of Ashburn. Sharon C. Reeves is Turner County Middle School FFA advisor. The FFA Floral Design Career Development Event is sponsored by the Georgia State Florists Association as a spe cial project of the Georgia FFA Foundation. FFA is a national organiza tion of over 449,000 members preparing for leadership. Hannah Rooks Military James White Army Pvt. James G. White has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army his tory, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
