Turner 12th poorest county in the state
by Ben Baker
Editor
Turner County is the 12th
poorest in the state according
to the most recent report from
the Department of Community
Affairs (DCA) in Atlanta.
The annual DCA report
reviews all 159 counties across
the state and groups them into
4 tiers. Tier 1 is the poorest and
tier 4 is the richest.
The DCA report does not
exactly state Turner County is
the 12th poorest in the state,
rather it calls the top 40 Tier 1
counties “as the 40 least devel
oped counties.”
The vast majority of Teir 1
counties are below the Fall
Line. Hancock County is in the
No. 1 spot for the least devel
oped.
In this area, Wilcox County
is ranked 14, Terrell is 19,
Crisp is 21, Irwin 23, Dooly
29, Colquitt is ranked 58 and
Tift County 70. Of this area,
only Worth County is ranked in
Tier 2 at 80. Lee County is a
Tier 3 at 133.
All but 6 of the Tier 4 coun
ties are in the Metro Atlanta
area. The exceptions are Harris
County (Columbus), Houston
County, Columbia County
(Savannah) and on the coast
Effingham, Bryan and Glynn
counties.
Being a Tier 1 county does
bring economic advantages.
The state allows any kind of
business in these counties to
get a $3,500 per job tax credit
for creating 5 or more jobs.
