Law elected President-elect of American School Counselors Association
BRIAN LAW, American School Counselors
Association President Elect Elect and Jim Bierma,
President from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Brian Law, Valdosta High
School Counselor and Georgia
School Counselors Association
(GSCA) President 2008-2009
has been elected as the
President Elect-Elect of the
American School Counselors
Association (ASCA) to serve
as President of the organization
in 2010-2011.
Law began this endeavor
running against four other can
didates who were to be nar
rowed to three that would be
placed on the ballot for the
24,000 ASCA members to cast
votes for this governing board
position. Law faced Dr. Alan
Burkhard, Counselor Educator
from Wisconsin; Dr. Marrius
Pettiford, Dean of Students
from North Carolina; Carol
Turner, Middle School
Counselor from Alabama and
Donna Verbka, State
Department School Counseling
Supervisor from Nebraska.
At the ASCA Delegate
Assembly held in Atlanta, GA
in June, the 177 delegates
voted after hearing each of the
candidate’s speeches and view
ing their resumes and position
statements. Burkhard, Law and
Verbka made the cut and were
placed on the ballot for this
highest held office on the gov
erning board of the American
School Counselors
Association.
Law was on his way to the
GSCA conference in Augusta
on Monday, November 17th
when he received the call from
ASCA’s Immediate Past
President, Eric Sparks of North
Carolina to congratulate him.
However, he could not share in
the news until all candidates
were notified. Jim Bierma,
ASCA President from
Minnesota planned to
announce Law’s win to the
almost 1000 attendees at the
GSCA conference on
Thursday. When announced
the room rose to applause and
Law was joined by many
school counselors from
Valdosta City Schools, the
Valdosta High School Chorus
and their director Rebecca
Mullican who was present to
perform at this opening ses
sion. The voting ended just in
time to have the current presi
dent share this win with Law’s
state at the state conference.
This may well have been the
first time this has worked out
for the announcement to be
made to the winner’s state at
the conference.
Law stated that he actually
came in as the “underdog”
being the only person of the
five running who has not
served on the ASCA governing
board, but guesses that his love
and support of school counsel
ing and children and being a
practicing school counselor
helped him pull in the votes.
Law said, “This is not only a
highlight of my career, but this
is also great for Georgia,
Valdosta and Valdosta City
Schools. It just proves that we
are Title Town and we rank at
the top in the nation in student
services. I was proud to have
my colleagues and my VHS
students present for this excit
ing occasion. It was hard to
keep this news quiet and act as
if I did not know for 3 days!”
Law will finish his position as
president of GSCA in June
2009 and will take office of
President- Elect of ASCA in
October 2009.

Mountain, where some were
able to get some Christmas
shopping in. We then traveled
to Mountain Creek Lodge,
where we all enjoyed dinner
together. It was a beautiful set
ting. Great looking food was
spread to for us all to enjoy the
festive meal. We were treated
royally with a bountiful feast,
and then more shopping for
those that were interested.
Next, came the big event!
Many loaded onto the trolley
and rode through the open air
to see the beautiful Christmas
displays. Others, who weren’t
quite so brave, stayed on the
bus and made the trip though
the maze of lights. It was
breathtaking!
One of the high lights this
year was to have Mr. Pait
Willis, and his lovely wife, Ms.
Rachel on the trip with us. We
are so thankful Mr. Willis and
the entire bank family supports
the efforts of the Prime Timers
as they do! We have had a
wonderful year!
Bank president, Brinson
Brock was on hand to see us
off as we left that morning, and
was there when we got back at
about 11:30 PM! Our thanks go
to Chief McCard of the Ashbun
Police Department, as he made
sure on duty officers were at
the bank as we rolled in late at
night, as well. We are fortu
nate to have so many that care
so much. If you aren’t banking
with South Georgia and a
member of the Prime Timers,
you should consider it strongly!
This trip we just took was one
of so many benefits of being
associated with a great group
of professionals. People who

Coach Shedrick Office.
The Turner County Rebels lost their last game of the year
before the Christmas Break to Dooly 60-74. Tadric Jackson
recorded his first triple double of the season with 41 points, 12
assist, and 15 rebounds. The Rebels are in 3rd place overall in the
Smack Conference trailing two team tied for first place 6-0
Wilcox County and Macon County. The Rebels will play Ben Hill
in Ashbum at 4 at the old gym 1/8/09 and then they will travel to
Rochelle Ga. to play the first place Wilcox Patriots
The Rebels allowed Dooly County forwards to score 55
points. 45 of those points came from inside the post. In Turner
County three defeats this year the Rebels big men have been out
rebounded by a 4 to 1 ratio. The Rebels guards simply have trou
ble with opposing guards and this has been a consistent weakness.
The defense played by the Rebels guards is turning opposing
guards into the highlight reel on late night sports programs.
The Lady Rebels
The Lady Rebels defeat the Dooly County Bobcats 49-37
going into the Christmas break. The Lady Rebels are currently in
third place in the Smack Conference. The Lady Hurricanes are in
first place and the Lady Cougars are in second. The Lady Rebels
will play for first place against the 9-0 Lady Hurricanes in
Ashbum Ga. at the old gym at 4. 1/8/09. Then the next day they
travel to Rochelle Lriday at 4:30 to play Wilcox.

My Dear Mother
My dear mother oh, how much I miss you.
Their is not a day I don't think about you, I long to see
your beautiful eyes and hear your voice just one more
time.
Mother when I was a child you would walk before me
to set an example. When I was a teenager you walked
behind me to be there when I needed you. When I
became an adult you walked beside me as two friends
so we could enjoy life together. But, oh how hard it is
to walk alone.

8 million lights!
The lights were powered by
wind turbines this year, and
that was probably a good thing,
as there would have been lots
of electricity burned otherwise!
We saw lights designed as sun
flowers, daisies, poinsettias,
animals, and long streamers
that seemed to be hanging from
the sky.
We agreed from the start as
we pulled out from the bank,
that we would leave behind all
our aches, pains, and problems.
Ms. Evelyn told the group she
had Pepto-Bismol, Mylanta,
and Tylenol, but no one seemed
to need it. Snacks were fur
nished to everyone’s delight!
We had on board folks from
Turner, Crisp, Dougherty, Tift,
Wilcox Counties, and even as
far away as from Jacksonville
Llorida. What a great group!
Miss May Hart, Golden Key’s
Representative was there, along
with Evelyn Barker and Judy
Lorenzen who represented the
Prime Timers. Judy made the
trip complete. She sang, and

The children that were

were so appreciative this
year, a time when so
many had to cut back
extensively. We were so
pleased to see how faith

club members were to us!
Even with the tough eco

We thank the Turner

helping us to reach
these children. We feel

Gratitude is one of
the most important
ways to feel we have
helped bring hope and
peace to our neighbors.
I thank God for allow

opportunity, as no
doubt, we make a dif

ways in the lives of

things! What a wonderful thing
to be used for the betterment of
man-kind.
May the New Year be the
best for all of you! Remember,
people need the Lord, and we
can get his word to others
through our caring, and sharing
with those around us!
