Superintendent: BOE needs
help to set social media policy
Social media is a big issue and School
Superintendent Jeff McDaniel wants the
Board of Education to know what can,
can’t and needs to be done about its use by
students.
To that end, he said he wants Sheriff
Andy Hester and the Sheriff’s Department
to come speak with the board about social
media.
“Let them present what they see,” he
said.
“How much control do we have over
it,” said BOE member Sam Brown.
Board attorney John Holland said social
media was a topic of discussion at a recent
state School Board attorney conference.
That’s one of the questions Dr. Mc
Daniel hopes to have answered.
Board member Sandra Blue said cyber
bullying, bullying someone online through
social media, is a real issue that needs to
be addressed.
“I don’t think the sheriff is the person
for that... (telling us) how to be responsi
ble for social media,” said BOE member
Cornelius Ball.
Dr. McDaniel said the Sheriff’s Depart
ment regularly deals with social media and
its effects and affects. That’s information
the board may find useful, he said.
More importantly, he wants the board
to know if social media can help students.
“How can we use it as a tool to improve
our school system?” he said.
Mr. Brown said the board first needs to
learn how to use it before trying to put
rules for others.
CONTROLS
One avenue for control is already in
place. The school system offers Internet
access. That access and what is viewed can
be monitored, Mr. Ball said.
“Once you use my network, I have a
right to see what you do,” he said. “If they
use our network, we can hold them re
sponsible for it. Every state entity does
that. We shouldn’t be any different.”
Except the school’s Internet connection
is not needed to get online. Smartphones
can connect to the Internet without going
through the school network.
