The spill was caused by the heavy rains and saturated soils. The heavy flows exceded the capacity of the pumps in the Rockhouse lift station. EPD and the Turner County Health Dept, have been noti fied. The area is posted. We estimate 80,000 gallons of wastewater spilled into Hat Creek. Sycamore policy update Sycamore is considering updating its employee drug testing policy. Mayor Wayne Woodruff said the current policy allows an employee to challenge a re quest for a drug test. The way the policy is worded, there has to be a suspicion of drug or on- the-job alcohol use before a test can be ordered. The mayor said that allows an employee to ask for the reason for a test. “It’s vague. It has to be changed,” Mayor Woodruff said. “He (the City attorney) wanted us to come up with kind of what we wanted.... It’s one thing the City needs to get up to date on. It’s past due.” Councilman Fred Eister suggested the City get drug testing policies from the County Commission, Ashbum and the Sheriff’s Department. Councilman Jim Galt- Brown said Georgia will soon have medical marijuana ap proved. When that happens, getting a prescription for med ical marijuana with a THC content as high as 45 percent, will be very easy, he said. THC is the chemical in marijuana that gets a user high. Mr. Galt-Brown used an ex treme example, a stubbed psy chic toe, as a reason to get a medical marijuana prescrip tion. Sitting in the audience Blake Christian laughed. “Why are you laughing?” the councilman asked. "Because you are right,” Mr. Christian replied. Mr. Galt-Brown also said the day is coming when mari juana will be made legal just as Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Washington DC have done. So, whatever policy is adopted has to be flexible enough to adapt to changing laws. It was noted the City policy can be updated as needed to re flect new laws. Along with making it legal will come revisions to laws about the limit of THC permit ted in a person’s system before they are declared under the in fluence. At the request of Mr. Galt- Brown, the matter was tabled until the City attorney can make a recommendation. In other matters: • The Street Department budget was amended to reflect $16,000 for street lights. The approved budget had $1,600. Councilman Eister took the blame for the typo. • Last month’s request for Wifi at the Fire Department was again postponed. City Clerk Ashely Topley said it will cost the City $150 a month for that and phone service at the City bam. Mayor Woodruff said he wanted Fire Chief Terry Peavy to explain in more detail why the City should spend that much on wireless Internet at the fire department.
