2 new trucks every year at near 0 cost?
The Turner County
Commission may get 2
new heavy trucks for
the Road Department
at no cost, very low
cost or possibly make a
small profit by selling
the trucks after keeping
them for 12 months. A
vote on the proposal
was set for Tuesday
evening’s meeting.
At the workshop meeting
last week, Chris Warren with
Worldwide Equipment spoke
to the Commission at the
March meeting and briefed the
board on the plan. Road Super
intendent Dustin Beaty said it
sounds too good to be true, but
it actually is a working pro
gram.
This is how it works:
The County orders 1, 2 or
however many trucks are
needed. Heavy equipment
manufacturers sell the rigs to
local governments at a price
well below what the retail and
commercial market has to pay.
Worldwide guarantees a
minimum bid price if the truck
is sold at an auction 12 months
later.
The County keeps the
trucks for 12 months, just pay
ing the interest on the loan
needed to buy the truck. Local
governments often get better
interest rates than businesses
and industries. Mr. Warren said
the County actually owns the
truck during those 12 months.
Meantime, the truck is fully
warranted and all major repairs
are covered by that warranty.
The County must handle rou
tine maintenance.
At the end of 12 months, the
truck goes to auction. This is
legal under Georgia law. The
truck sells at auction. Mr. War
ren said most buyers are from
the West and Midwest.
The buyers get a fairly new
truck with a factory warranty
for much less than buying a
brand new truck.
Mr. Warren said sometimes
local governments make a little
money on the sale and some
times lose a little money. He
added, "no one has lost their
shirt doing this."
Mr. Beaty said the Road De
partment can use 2 trucks right
now. He has 2, but one is in the
shop and has been for a while
waiting on parts. He encour
aged the Commissioners to try
this program as it means the
Road Department could get 2
new trucks every year at
amuch lower cost than buying
them on loan.
Mr. Warren said this frees
up manpower at the County
