Gale and I are in the midst of one of those difficult sea sons of life: taking care of my deceased parents’ final busi ness affairs and dispersing their earthly belongings. As I write this evening we are in north Georgia where it has been a chilly, rainy and dreary day. It makes me look forward to getting back to our home in south Georgia when today the thermometer showed that it barely reached fifty degrees up here while it was well into the seventies down there. But the weather is not the only un pleasant part of our visit. There is great uneasiness when going through our loved ones most personal and special pos sessions. As far as monetary value is concerned, much of it would be considered to be junk, but to them it was special treasures that they dared not part with. Our daddy was quite pri vate and protective of his be longings, so it was almost a sacred thing earlier today as I went into the basement and rummaged through his tools and other items. And even though it is completely legal and acceptable for me to claim whatever I want of his belong ings to take home with me, it generated a feeling of wrong doing as his treasures became mine without me asking for his permission. But it also af fected thoughts from deep within my well of memories as I layed hands on things that are connected to days long gone by. Both of my parents left this world in the past year only a The Ultimate In the next few weeks, there will be a lot of focus, in many different ways, on the subject of gifts. But there is a gift that surpasses all—John 3:16. For the past few weeks, we have examined some things that we take for granted that would be dramatically, and tragically different if Jesus Christ had not come to the earth. But, let us now consider Jesus, the Ulti mate Gift. We have to draw close to find strength in the One who is the ultimate per sonality. He was aware of the laughter of children...the tears of grief...the hunger and lone liness that affect us all. Christ has come! Long ages may Inspiration few months apart from each other. While they were elderly with many health problems, we thought we had more time to be spent with them. God had other plans and His plans are always perfect, and we ac cept that reality. Those decades that He gave us as a family were certainly made up of time well spent. When we consider the value of time shared together with family and other loved ones, it is good for us to be re minded that our relationship with God grows stronger when we set aside time to spend with Him. All of us live in a high- energy, high-demand world that can easily cause us to give far too little attention to our re lationship with God. Some times it requires us to lay aside some things —even important things —to do the better thing and commune with God. In the New Testament book of Ephesians, we get a re minder of a great man of God, Apostle Paul, who valued being able to commune with God in prayer. He realized that he, along with all followers of Gift elapse before His glory has re duced the world to ordered beauty, and before He has clothed a glorified humanity in garments of white, but Christ has come!. He is the Revealer of all things that prowl in the darkness, the Stiller of the storms of passion, the Quick - ener of all that is wholesome, the Adorner of all that is beau tiful, the Harmonizer of all dis cord, the Reconciler of all contradictions, the Healer of all our diseases, and our Savior from our sins. Christ has come! The Torch for truth, the Anchor of hope, the Pillar of faith, the Rock for strength, the Refuge for security, the Fountain for Christ, were members of a spiritual family headed up by God Himself. As a member of that family he could communi cate with the Father through prayer, which brought growth and vitality to his spiritual life. In like manner, communing with God consistently brings great strength to our relation ship with God. As a result of his awareness that he belonged to the family of God and that God was his heavenly Father, Paul had the assurance that when he prayed he was heard by Him. He wrote regarding his communi cation with God: “For this rea son I kneel before the Father, from Whom His whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name” (Ephesians 3:14-15, New International Version). He continues: “I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being” (verse 16). What joy Paul must have experi enced with the assurance that He was heard by God as he called out to Him in prayer. He went on to refer to God as the One Who is “able to do im measurably more than all we ask or imagine” (verse 20). The more time we spend with God, the greater realiza tion we have of His goodness and availability. As we grow in our relationship with Him the more we value prayer and the results that it yields in us and through us. Without a doubt, time spent with Him is time well spent. refreshment, the Rose for beauty, the Lamb for tender ness, the Friend for counsel, the Brother for love. Jesus has trod upon the face of the earth. His steps will not be obliter ated. Can't we follow the Shep herd, and walk in the Light? But we sneer, and dismiss, and coo over the Baby, but ignore the Man and His word, thus denying His divinity, and sub stitute our own ideas, and look what a mess we have made. We have less time left each day that passes to acknowledge this Gift and what it cost, and be come His child. 229-567- 1552.
