Th.it is nn interesting situation
mowing out of the proposition to
annex to the state of Alabama the
northwestern part of the state of
Flurfil.i. Jnst now it h tlic leading
topic of discussion in Tallahassee, in
Pensacola and among the members
of the Alabama legislature in session
at Montgomery.
Alabamians are, naturally, great*
ly in favor of the acqdisitiou of this
valuable addition to the epast line of
their state. Again, the people of
the strip of Florida to be annexed
are heartily in fayor of the move.
They are ambitious—those Pensaco
la citizens especially. Pensacola is
a great port, but ns a Florida port,
with all the capamlists and the out
siders and the politicians in the state
working eonslantly for the devel
opment of the East coist, they feel
I heir claims for government aid in
the improvement of their magnifi
cent harbor have been ignored.
Florida has but two represent
atives in congress, while Alabama
has eight. The Punsacolans think
that they will stand better chance
for securing recognition as a
part of Alabnuia than they are now
receiving as their due ns a segment
of Florida. Whnt the Honda legis
lature will do about the matter at Us
approa thing session remains to be
seen, but it locks to a man up a
tree ns it the people of the section in
question should be allowed to pass
upon the question themstlves and
that, if they are willing and
Alalmma is willing, the rest of the
Florida penninsula width lias treat
eil tins end of the slate v^ith such
scant affection ought not stand in
the way of the marriage.—Atlanta
