NOTICE TO EMPLOYES
In order, in so far as possible,
to relieve from financial worry
those of our employes who are
subject to millitary duty and
also as an expression of desire
on the part of this company
to make substantial recognition
of this opportunity to co-operate
with its employes in carrying
out its share of the common duty
of all to answer the national call
for military assistance, the policy
of this company will be as fol
lows:
This announcement applies to
all employes of this company
formally enrolled as members
in good standing in any State
Military or Naval Organization
at midnight Monday, June 19th
1916, and who who are accept
ed by the proper military offic
ers for officers for active ser-
vise in the present Mexican
crisis:
In* case of orders being issued
by the military auhorities requir
ing the services of employes
mentioned above for actual
military duty, necessitating ab
sence from the regular duties
of this company compensation
will be awarded as follows: •
After allowance being made
for payment for service by the
government, or state, of from
any other source, the direct re
sult of military service, this
company will pay as military
compensation the difference be
tween such sources of income
and the following:
To all married and single men
contributing reguraly to the
support of actual dependents,
two thirds of their average
salary or wage based on their
previous average salary or wage
earned during the three months
preceeding their absence.
To all single or married men
not contributing regularly to
the support of actual depend
ents, one-half of their average
salary or wage.
Thus an employe with depend
ents whose average wage for
three months has been $100 per
month and who receives $15.00
per month from the govern
ment will be granted military
compensation from this com
pany of $51.66 per month.
Payment of military compen
sation will be paid direct to the
dependents designated, or upon
the request of men without de
pendents. will be held in trust
by the company until the return
of the employe.
The period of absence on mili
tary duty will not be consider
ed a breach in continuity of
service as affecting our life
Insurance or Pension regulations
but such time of absence will
included in the company service
record of each employe the
same as if he had engaged in
military service. During such
absence of an employe, the
Life Insurance issued to him
by this company will remain in
full force and effect.
Discrimination will not be
made in any manner aganist
any employe upon his return
from military service, and as far
as possible arrangements will be
made tor each man to return to
his former position.
The above conditions will ap
ply to employes whose extent
of absences is one year or less,
continuously in state military
or naval service, but the pri
vilege of the company is reccg
nized to make modifications, ex
tensions or abrogations of these
conditions at any future time as
may appear advisable.

The sunshine of Virginia
is in them!
AFP you know well enough what that means,
1 “ you’ve ever smoked a Virginia cigarette.
* 'The tobacco man's tobacco” is what Virginia
is called. One reason is because Virginia gives
to a cigarette the one quality no otheVtobacco
can give— character”!—that zest and life that
makes a cigarette satisfying.
Sun-goldened, lively, mellow Virginia—that’s
Piedmonts! ALL Virginia! There’s “character”
aplenty in Piedmonts.
Have you been woridering why your cigarette
is shy of taste? Why it is just merely “a smoke”?
It s because it lacks ‘‘character”!
So try Piedmonts-

Bowel Complaints In India j
In a lecture at one of the Des
Moines, Iowa, churches a miss
ionary from India told of go
ing into the interior of India
where he was taken sick, that
he had a bottle of Chamberlain’s
Colic, Colic and Diarrheoa Re
medy with him and believed
that it saved his life. This re
medy is used successfully in
India both as a preventive and
cure for cholera. You may
know from this that it can be
depended upon for the milder
forms of bowel complaint that
occur in this country. Obtain

MEAT CURING IN SUMMER
IN COLD STORAGE
On the afternoon of April 12th, Mr. J. F. Fain of R. F.
D. killed two hogs for the purpose of testing the killing and
saving of meat in hot weather by cold storage. On the
morning of April 13th the meat was thoroughly salted and
placed in our meat curing cold storage. At the’end of thirty
days half thejmeat was taken out of storage and put through
the usual smoking process for ten or twelve days. Fifteen
days later Mr. Fain came for the balance of his meat and
seated that he had made a thorough examination of the first
lot and found it thoroughly preserved nicely cured and as
fine as any meat he[had ever cured during cold weather.
We are prepared to take care of all meat-brought us
for curing.
