Si OUST I PAPER FUEL Atlanta, Ga.—Enough wood has been wasted around Georgia saw mills in the form of saw dust and slabs to supply the whole United States with white paper for five years, according to a famous chemical engineer who recently visited the state. Why shouldn’t this wood waste be reclaimed and turned into paper by a plant located in in the state? J. C. McAuliffe, president of the Georgia Press Association, accompanied by a committee from the association, has re cently undertaken in New York to negotiate a contract to supply the newspapers in the association with white paper and in connec tion with this contract the com mittee also took up the subject of a paper plant in Georgia with several large paper manufac turers. In addition to the wood waste around abandoned sawmill sites,*’ there is a large quantity of waste in stumps left in the woods. This query, propounded to pro minent business men of Atlanta and the south, in all lines of business, has just elicited many interesting replies, in which a variety of explanations and theories are advanced. In ordinary times the general opinion is that railway pur chases form the basis of pros perity, but this is not the case at the present time because it is a well known fact that the rail roads have kept out of the mar ket on account, of the high prices of steel and iron produets caused by the European war. The fact, however, that the steel industry is prospering from war orders is offered in support of the opinion that “steel” leads the way to prosperity in normal times and that the prosperity of this industry in normal times depends upon the extent to which the railroads, which are perhaps the largest purchasers of steel, are in the market. It is believed that the inevit able slump in war business which will follow the close of the European war will be offset to a very considerable degree by the re-entery of the railroads into the steel market as pur chasers.
