CONTRIBUTED May - September Saturdays, 8am-12pm Twenty artists from around Georgia gathered Saturday, May 20 in midtown Atlanta around an iconic Steffen Thomas sculpture for the first in a series of events celebrating Steffen Thomas’s contribution to the Atlanta art scene. Their goal: to capture the essence of the Trilon Fountain on canvas, as interpreted through their eyes. Trilon, donated to the City of Atlanta by Steffen Thomas, won an Urban Design for Excellence in 1975 and stands at the corner of 15th and Peachtree Streets across from the Woodruff Arts Center. The Plein Air Paint Out (artists painting outside) was the first event of Steffen Thomas: A Legacy in Atlanta, a partnership between the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. Almost two years in the making, this multi-faceted program focuses on the public art in the metro Atlanta area created by Steffen Thomas during his 60-year career there (1930 - 1990). In addition to the Plein Air Paint Out, the program includes the following events: June 8 from 6-9 p.m. Steffen Thomas: A Legacy in Atlanta Exhibit @ Gallery 72 in Atlanta. Opening reception and exhibition of art created by the participants in the Plein Air Paint Out and a selection of Steffen Thomas art at Gallery 72, a city owned and managed gallery located at 72 Marietta Street. The reception is catered by Hallie Jane’s Catering of Madison. The exhibition continues through July 28. June 17 at 10 a.m. to noon. Steffen Thomas Public Art Walk led by Lisa Thomas Conner, Thomas’ youngest daughter. The art walk will begin at the Trilon Fountain and proceed to the artist’s last studio in midtown where Thomas sculptures are placed in the wall in front of the house. From there, Margaret Agner paints during Saturday's Steffan Thomas event in Atlanta. VILLAGE ! mon OSSIN the group will visit several other spots in midtown, including Four Seasons Hotel where a Steffen Thomas piece is installed. Final stop is at the Goethe Institute for a Thomas exhibition and reception. The entire walk is 1.8 miles. Interested parties should RSVP to patricia@ steffenthomas.org. Aug. 24 from 6- 8 p.m. Steffen Thomas: A Legacy in Atlanta Exhibit @ Steffen Thomas Museum of Art. The exhibit from Gallery 72 travels to the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art in Buckhead for an opening reception at the museum that houses Steffen Thomas’s life works. Many of the Plein Air Paint Out artists will be present for the evening’s festivities. This evening also serves as a celebration for the 20th Anniversary of the museum.
