» Your hometown newspaper since 1861 The Eatonton Alessenger THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 2025 | C3 Movie Review: Back with The Bad Guys 2 Katie Flicker The Eatonton Messenger Last weekend, I went to see the sequel to The Bad Guys, an animated comedy released in 2022 by Universal Pictures. The Bad Guys 2 brings back the iconic gang of Mr. Wolf, Snake, Piranha, Shark, and Webs, who are each debuting their “good” life as regular, productive citizens. The life of crime is behind them, but with it so is the lavish life. Perhaps a bit too relatable, the movie begins by showing the struggle of the reformed villains trying to find jobs and living off the bare minimum they can afford. Despite having saved the city in the previous movie, many citizens still hold a negative perception of The Bad Guys, their former criminal name. These perceptions lead Wolf, the crew’s leader, to question if change really is for the better, and to remi nisce about the life he once led. The governor, Diane Foxington, urges him to not give up, while subtly reminding him it took a while for her to reform, too, after her criminal past as the Crimson Paw. These conflicted feel ings come into question shortly after Wolf and his team find the perfect job opening; helping the former police chief (now commissioner) solve the case of the Phantom Bandit. Hoping to get enough recognition and good faith from the job, the crew sets out to expose the bandit. However, their plans are foiled when the tables are turned to reveal the bandit, or bandits, were stringing them along only to kidnap them. The Phantom Bandit is actually a trio of bad girls and fans of The Bad Guys. Inspired by their previous crimes and prestigious reputation as “monsters” who forcibly earned their right in society, the girls seek The Bad Guys’ help to pull off one last, big heist. And that is where the plot begins rolling with discus sion of self-worth and change, amid underlying hints of romance carried over from the first movie. Overall, the film is an enjoyable, funny, family watch for adults and chil dren. It sees the return of many characters from the first film while adding three unique characters to the cast that add a sense of coolness, childishness, and conflict. The Bad Guys battle inner turmoil that many young adults or late teens may think about when looking toward their futures and the identity they have built around themselves, making the underlying narrative that much more relatable. I would give The Bad Guys2 a nine out of 10 for offering a funny, well-an imated experience tied to serious and relatable themes that wrap up any loose ends from the first movie. And stay seated for an after-credits scene that also ties up a big question from the first movie but leaves the door wide open for a third installment in The Bad Guys series.
