Commission meeting opens with county recognitions Story and photos by Ian Tocher ian@msgrnews.com The Putnam County Board of Commissioners met last Friday and opened with four public proclamations. The first acknowl edged the retirement of Senior Personal Property Appraiser Leisa Reid in the county’s tax office and recognized her 48 years of service to Putnam County. Reid began her career with the county on June 6, 1977, and held several positions over the decades since, including clerk, deed researcher, mapper, real property appraiser, office manager, and personal property appraiser for the only full- time employer she ever knew. “The conclusion of Leisa’s distinguished career marks not only the end of an era, but also the beginning of a well- earned retirement filled with new opportunities, adventures, and the joys of time spent with family and friends,” Commission Chairman Bill Sharp read from the proclamation prior to the meeting’s start. Next, Sharp read a similar retirement announcement recog nizing Torrey Whit taker for 20 years of county service, finishing his career as assis tant director of public buildings. Sharp said, “the lasting impact of Torey Whittak er’s contributions will be reflected in the continued use and enjoyment of the public facilities he helped to shape and preserve.” A public proclama tion followed to declare September as “National Recovery Month.” With representatives from Beyond the Bell, Ocmulgee ATCC, and Georgia Council for Recovery present, Sharp called upon Putnam County citizens to support addiction recovery initia tives. Part of National Recovery Month will be a visit by the “Recovery Bus,” which will park in front of the Putnam County Courthouse for about 90 minutes begin ning at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 22. The final county proc lamation also recognized September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, with the commis sion urging all Putnam County citizens to “spread awareness of the disease, provide support to those affected by this illness, and educate others on its prevention and early detection.” County Chairman Bill Sharp displays a proclamation declaring September as "National Recovery Month," flanked by Commissioners Richard Garrett (left) and Dr. Stephen Hersey.
