Discrimination"
In a statement made after his
recent return from an inspection
tour of Africa for Democratic
Presidential candidate John F.
Kennedy, Governor Averell Harri
man reported that the African
countries lack confidence in the
United States because of its prac
tice of racial discrimination. Gov
ernor Harriman cited a recent
article in a local Ghana newspa
per about the 20,000 illegitimate
children who have been taken off
the relief rolls in Louisiana, whose
headline —- “Negro Children Starv
ing in America” — confronted him
upon arrival in Ghana, as an ex
ample of the publicity which racial
discrimination receives in foreign
newspapers. Said Harriman, “I
cannot underline too strongly the
need for progress in the elimina
tion of discrimination in our coun
try as an essestial to the develop
ment of full friendship and confi
dence between our country and
the new African states.”
