The Historical Background
Friendship Baptist
Church has indeed a truly
unique history. It became
a regularly constituted
congregation in 1892 in the
month of April. From July
1848 some of the members
who later made* up the first
congregation of Friendship
were members of the First
Baptist Church of this city.
An entry on the records
of the First Baptist Church
July 2, 1848 reads as fol
lows: “Church met and
opened a door for recep
tion of members. Rec’d
by letter George a colored
man, the property of Col.
F.M. Garnet, from Mariet
ta Church.**
An entry also on the re
cords of First Baptist
Church reads “April 4th,

members. Recieved by ex

We can only imagine that
the atmosphere surround
ing the Civil War lead the
25 persons under the lea
dership of the Reverend
Frank Quarles to separate
themselves from the First
Baptist Church and to seek
to organize their own
church. During the siege
of Atlanta, the Reverend
Quarles went to Macon and
there he organized the Saint
James Baptist Church.
After the war end^d, he
returned to Atlanta and to
the little flock here. He
found them without a build
ing in which to worship. A
freight car box was sent
to Atlanta through the ge
norosity of the Ninth Street
Baptist Church of Cincin
nati, Ohio for this little
congregation to use.
It was there in this box

a new place of worship\
was built on the southwest

of the rapid growth of the
congregation, the building
at Haynes and Markham

to be too small.
And thus it was in 1871
the beginning of the pre

through the generosity of
a loan from the American

$1,500. The congregation
occupied the basement of
this building in 1872 and
worshiped there while the

MR. E. M. MARTIN
Dr. Jackson’s tenure was
brief for the Lord called
him June 1953. Dr.
Jackson, like his prede

community outreach of the
church and was himself
one of the active spirtis

this city and state.
The Reverend Doctor
Samuel W. Williams who
had served for five years
as assistant to Dr. Jackson
became the action minis

he was called to be the pas

spirit and fellowship of
the church is deepending.
The church faces the fu
