A group of cheering Eta Lambda brothers hailed Dr. Lionel
H. Newson, newly-elected fenerall President-Elect of the Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. when he deplaned at the Atlanta air
port Sunday night ot last week.
Approximately twenty mem
bers of local Alpha Phi Alpha
chapters, some with their wives
joined the family at the air
port to extend a rousing wel
come to the second member
of Eta Lambda chapter to be
come General President of Al
pha Phi Alpha within the past
half dozen years.
Dr. Newson who is Professor
of Sociology at Morehouse and
recently re-elected president of
Eta Lambda, local graduate
chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fra
ternity was in Washington, D.C.
when the results of the national
poll for General President of
the oldest Negro greek letter
organization was reported from
Chicago to him by one of his
campaign workers.
The count of the sealed bal
lots showed approximately a
three to one majority of the
thousands of brothers voting
throughout the nation favoring
him as next General Presi
dent of the fraternity.
Dr. Newsom will succeed Dr.

In Soldier's Wish
A New Year's greeting jotted '
down m a diary in the year 1863
exempted Southerners.
Sam Smyth, a Union lieutenant
fighting in the mud of the Civil
War at Holly Springs. Mississippi,
made this notation in his journal:
“Happy New Year to all the
world, except our Southern Rebel
friends, their aiders and abettors

Obviously, the entry was made
at a time when things were going
badly for the North. The entry
continued: . . .” though to speak
truly 1 think the prospect is not
such as to warrant and in even
hoping that the wish (of a Happy
New Year) may be fulfilled . . .
I had hoped to see a ditlerent state
of things, and that we should
enter upon the New Year with the
bright prospect of a speedy ter
mination of this exhausting con
flict.”
The journal, with human and
personalized descriptions of the
Civil War, is among the collection
of Lincolniana and Civil War ma
terials in the Wyles Collection at
Santa Barbara, Calif., College.
