The reporter for this who had tlu' pleasure of interviewing him' wb.ile hi re, experienced tile moral gratification of coming for die first time in personal contact vdth this pioneer protector of our game. We found in him a personality both pleasing and convincing and yet be neath the steady current, pulsing in to the realm beyond the surface and where the real manhood d\v ‘lls, we found not only a man pleasm to con verse with and thoroughly instruc tive on any topic of converse ion,but a man whose depth of reason meas ures the foundation of things and \vhieh gave one a fe ding tlur lie was in the presence of a man ot deep conviction and ability t° va" ‘UP uny j>n;-p<isp opep deliberately mimed. However the Broxton dis- I triet decides the question it is sure, to have an influence ovei otlfei; dis- i tricts in the County as many people I in different sections nave been seri- ] ously considering the proposition.* j RESIDENCE BURNS TUESDAY NIGHT On last Tuesday night fire destroy ed a house belonging to W. M. Com mon on College Street. Mr. L. B. Kendrick an engineer on the G. & F. Ry. was living in the house and had a very narrow escape as he had to be ! awakened after the fire was discover ed by some one on the outside and he j barely reached the yard as the house fell in. We understand that there was some insurance both on the house and furniture but do not know how much. The Colored Fair We regret that the colored fair has not proven a success. The at atwndauir has been small and the exhibitions almost a failure. We feel that it is the white mans duty to aid and encourage the negro in every undertaking that will lead to his ad vancement along agricultural and in dustrial lines. He is with us and it is a problem which we of the South alone must solve. Some of the lead ing negroes are doing all in their pow er to persuade the idle .criminal class of negroes, to become industrious law abiding citizens. There is no greater menace to the security and progress of the white race than the criminal negro,. The past bus sufficiently demonstCitod that lynching is not a remedy for any vvri ng except in the individual case. It teaches no lesson but brute force, it plants no seed from which a greater gepytuboo will spring, it rt moves p,» cause but sim ply puyisfitp for the uct. To remove j the qmse we must get his mind olf l of prime he must Feci pie personally J interested in seme vocation or hue of labor, Tfie mind determined on accom plishing a certain definite object be comes so interested that other mat ins (ViUe to attract the attention. The negro knows that his friend is the South, he has tried his fortune North of the Mason and Dixon hue but Lund that it was not, Ffip coun try for him. Wfigp any disposition is show) by Ids race to develop ‘ tfiritty habits and better qualities 1 ici us encourage and help him, but always giving him to undyifStHud that between him ayyi ;.v».vipl equality and tkq right to y<>te stands a granite i. walk 1 *» i) COf?EE COUNTY, smt CIVJNTY. Secretary Tanner Books Mexico Still « Having Trouble * The changes in the Mexican situa tion come so thick and fast that is almost impossible to keep up with what has already happened and make it a mere guess as to what news will he flashed across the wires the next moment. It is conceded by all that the condition is indeed a delicate one for the Uhited States. The Munroe Doc trine lias again been called from the archives of rest for the purpose of inspection and interpretation and to discover whether or not it holds the key to the present situation m so far j as Europe is concerned or whether it too belongs to the dead post. Great Brittian, Germany and France are! now waiting for tile United States co submit its definite plan for handling Mexico and each of these great Na tions have expressed a w filing ness to back up this Country in any possible • plan to restore peace. Our present tangled relations with Mexico are the ! outcome of an unfaithful embassador, j a man unfit fur any of the great re- ; sponsibilities of that office, and not in sympathy with the Washington administration. The Munroe Doc trine will quite likely be found ade quate to hold in check Asiatic and European methods of warfare on this continent. Following past his tory these hi w Nations across the wa ters would if not prevented by Amer ican methods and doctrines, step down from their roost at this stage of the game and after much high di plomacy proceed to jiartitoin the once famous Mexico into about three parts, but there is where we come in. Presidet wilson by his great and mas terly speech in Mobile a few days ago made these things very plain to this Country, Mexico and all the rest of the world, first that peace must be restored to Mexico: second that the United States wants no Mexican ter ritory for herself and, third, Europe must hands off until a plan of settle ment can be reached. It is a great thing for these United States that a great calm, courageous statesman like Woodrow W ilson is at the helm of Government, instead of the lionhun-l ter or the golf player. A more deli- j cate situation has not confronted the I President of the United States ini many years past but no one doubtsthe ability of Wilson to handle it. Ev- j >n the big Nations mentioned believe ! him 'ihorougaly capable and have a /veed to hands off and await the re-1 suit >f his policy. Within six months j from the time Woodrow Wilson, the j i'radically unknown Governor of a it,tit State, took the oath of office as j President of the United States he ias gained a world wide reputation j is the greatest living ruler of this ige. When t m world can trust him what about ourselves. We transact I business in the day and sleep at right j just as tho M.-yke was beyond the | North Pole. We l ave the rigid man j n the right place.
