MACON, GA.
Thursday, February 18,1858.
mt.
About nine o’clock yesterday morning a fire j
broke out on th® premixes of Mr. F- F. Lewis,
on Walnut Street. The l ire 1 •cpartnieut went
to work with their Usual zeal, and managed
to check th® flames with the loss of the out
house where the tire originated. Voting
America No. 8 claims the honor of having been
first on the spot, but was closely followed and
ably seconded by Protection No. 1 and OcmuJ
gee No. 2. Hook and Ladder No. 4 made a
•Jiglit trial ut Uarir new apparatus, and proved
that they are 'prepared to do efficient service ,
whenever caJUed upon. In tint great credit is
due aTI <(f the companies for tln-ir exertions on 1
this occasion. Had it not been for their activi
ty and promptness, the tire would inevitably j
have communicated to tiie surrounding build- '
ings and occasioned great loss. We cannot
over estimate the necessity and importance of
keeping up our tire organizations.
ST. VALENTINE.
Somebody wants to know w hether St. Val
entine was a man or a woman. Without an
swering the question, we must express the
opinion that there are more females than males
who worship nt this shrine. We are inclined
to judge so from the large number of missives
received nt this office directed i« a female’s deli
cate writing. All hands, from devil to Editor,
make their politest bows to the gentle beings
wlm> liave tints honored them. Urrenonx a non \

Won’t somebody tell us all about it >.
Speaking of Valentine®, the best <»f the sea
son was one scut us containing six dollars for
three years mbtrnte snliscription to thep.per.
Wo can stand a few more hit-, of that kind— ,
upon the whole we rather like such bits.
PLANTER S CONVENTION.
This body met iir onr city, on Tuesday the
ll'itli inst., iffid* brgtftdZCd by vailing Gen. B.
11. lit THEItFoKI) to the Chair and requesting
lieu. James W. Ai:msti:ox<; to act as Secreta

tions passed, requesting papers friendly to the
objects of the meeting to announce that a gen
eral Convention of the Planters of the State
will be held,in Macon on the second Tuesday
in June next, and inviting planters generally
to be present. We have not beeu f urnished
with a copy of the ptx>eeedings, fait will try to
publish them in full in our next issue.
AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST.
We had the gratification a few days since of
being shown through Mr. Fuehmax’s studio St
i’n.n'slhvgucrrenn Gallery. In it appear tiie
familiar faces of Mvcnd of our citizen—life
like portraits, bearing lull tc.flimouy to the |
skill of the artist. It is known to most of our
readers that an appropriation was made by tin
late Legislature for the purpose of procuring
the portrait'ofit lios? noble heroes and patriot-.
Joiix Ci-tKK ami Geohge M. Titovr, to be
placed in the State Capitol. Mr. Fkeeman,
u< under-tami. is tin applicant for the painting
oftla-se portraits, and it. would be Lig lily grati
fying to his numerous friends for him to re
vive the appointment. It is the ( pinion of
<- uih'iinm iii'n in such matters that he is highly
<<>nipitent to cxet i:te the ta-k in the best style 1
of art.
TO CORRESPONDENTS-
We have on tile, numerous communications
on different subjects, but it is impossible to
make room lor them all at present. It gives
U' great pleasure to bear from our friends on
matters of public interest—their favors will
always he published provided they are receiv
ed in time ami we have the space for them.— I
W.- would how over suggest that a very essen
tial qualification for newspaper writers is Zov
rdy. We would much rather insert -a dozen
short articles than ope long one ; and besides
a short piece will be read by thousands, where
a long one wiJJ be read by no laxly. Study
brevity ami condensation; and we will try to
find a nook or corner for your productions in .
the State I'm: *.
H3N. A P. POWERS.
It will be seen from his card in to-day's pa
perthat Judge I’owgtis has concluded to resume
the practice of law, and will open his office in
this city aboul the first of next month. A
successful practitioner previous to his elevation
to the bench, lie obtained for himself as Judge
of this Circuit a reputation second to no judi
cial officer iu the State. His superior abilities
aud sound legal attain im-nN will no doubt soon
gain for hiitian extensive practice.
J-ts It is a shigular fact in the dismember
ment of the jA-inocratieparty, that while Doug
las and Wise line e- separated from the Presi
dent, both on the Kansas anil Nicaragua ques
tions. Seward and Hale, the head and front ot
freesoilism, endorse him —Prentice.
It in a tinaular fact that a paper, so respect
able as the Columbus Enquirer, should copy
the above statement from the Louisville Jour
nal, without comment. It is well known that
neither Seward nor Hale • endorse'’ the views
of the President on the Kansas question. Per
haps, however, the Eurpiirer considered that
in attaching the name "Prentice.'' to the para
graph, it bird done enough to pvt the reader on
his guard.

AN APT QUOTATION
Gbeei.t, in a recent exhortation to the Black,
Republican forces, closes with the Miltonian
exclamation:
“Awake, arise, or be forever fallen.”
There is something peculiarly apposite in this
quotation and the application. It is the speech

MX KEITT.
There can be no doubt, we suppose, that in
the late Congressional fracati, Mr. Kcitt was ,
in the wrung. Yet who can read the follow
ing, without feeling that the author is a true
gentleman ?
Mr. Kcitt—l a-k the house to indulge me a
moment fora |M?rsoii.d explanation. Ihe House
will remember th at its proceedings during the
session of Friday, were broken by an unpleas
ant incident. It is due to fair dealing that I
should assume upon this floor all responsibility
1 for the violation of its order, its dignity and its
decorum. I was the aggressor, and whatever
of responsibility attached to the act properly
belongs to me alone. It is also due to justice
that 1 should make whatever reparation is in
mv power for the dignity and decorum of the
Hoii'C thus violated. 1 do that in the expres
sion of my profound regret at the occurrence.
Personal collisions are always unpleasant, very
seldom exciisal le. and rarely justitiablc—nev< r.
in a legislative body. 1 feel the full force ot
the responsibility, which 1 assume in saying
that I was the aggressor, and the entire respon
sibility properly belongs to me.
