The oceii pant, a woman, refused it, saving that her bus band artisans were out hunting and if they tound me there, would murder me. 1 pre i ferret! the chance to the storm, and she con sented that 1 might lie down lie&tre the lire. Lathe night I heard them coming and scram bled up the chimney. Thinking 1 was safe, when nt the top. I stepped over the roof, and jumping down at the bnck of the cabin, jump ed plump into a wolf trap. A scream of pain brought the old man anil boys out, ami they declared 1 deserved a more severe punishment than death; so they kept me both in the trap and suspense until morning; and then heading nteup in a hogsliead. with no air and light but through the bung hole, th -y put me on a bled :'ind drove me some four miles up a hill, ami 'then rolled inc off to die. This, 1 undoubted ily would have done, Imt Sir a very singular occurrence. The wolves smelled me out. ami gathered around my prison, when one of them iu turning around happened to thrust his tail ' into the bung hole. It was my only chance, il caught a firm hold and held on like n sick kitten to a raw hide, which frightened the woltj of course, and bo started down the hill, followed by the hogshead and me. It was a very uneasy ride over the stumps; but I had no idea how long it until the hogshead, striking a stone staves worn by long travel, were broken and I jump ed out and found tnyselt away down in the lower end of Cotarangns county, some thirty ; miles from the scene ot the disaster. AN ARKANSAS FATHER'S AL VICE TO HIS ON Hob, you are about leaving homefor strange I parts. You are going to throw me out of the | game and go it alone. The odds are agin you. Bob—remember that industry and persever ance«re the winning cards, us they are the ‘•bowers.” Book hirning and idl that sort of thing, will do to fill up with, like small trumps, but you must have the bowers to back 'em else they aiut worth shucks. If luck runs agin you pretty strong, don’t cave in and look like a sick chicken <m a rainy day, but hold your head up. and make believe vou are flush of trumps; they won’t play so hard ngin yon. I've lived ■and travelled around some, Bob, and I've found out that as soon as folks thought you hel l u went hand, they'd all buck agin you strong. I Bo when you're sorter weak, keep on a boiil front; but play cautious; be satisfied with a, p'int. Many’s the hand I’ve seen 'em euchred cause they played for too much. Keep vour ■eyes well skinned, Bob ; don’t let. 'em nig vou ; recollect the game lays as much with the head .as with the hands. Be temperate; never get slrunk, for then no matter how good your hand you wont know how to play it : both bowers and the ace wont save you ; for there's sartin to be a “miss deal” or something wrong. And another thing, Bob, (this was s]s<ken in a low tone.) dont go too much on women ; queens is kinder poor cards; the more you have of’em the worse for you; you might have three and nary a trump. I dont say discard ’em all; if sou get hold of one that is a trump, it’s all good, and there’s wirtnin to be one out of four. And above all. Bob. be honest; never take a man's trick wot don’t belong to you. nor •■slip” | ■cards or “nig," tor then you can't look your man in the face, and when that’s the case, tliar's no fun in the game : it's a regular “cut throat” 80, now. Bob, farewell; remember : wot I tell you. and you'll be sure to win. and if you don't it sarves von right if v«u get “skunked.” StiAßr Tomcvks. —Two women in fashiona ble standing met one morning, with several others, at the house of one of the ladies, for a neighborly call. Now these two ladies cliane ed to hate each other very bitterly yet lived and moved ui the same circle on apparently pleasant looting—as ladies sometimes manage to do, in spite ot any amount of internal ma lice. Mrs. A. and Mrs. B. were talking on j that usually safe topic, the weather. Mrs. A, —Yes its horrible weather. In- I deed I think the climate of onr city nery un healthy, especially for the skin, producing the most di-agreeabie pimples, blotches. <tc. Mrs. 8.. (who has the cutaneous disorder nam ed above—while Mrs. A., is rather painfully asthmetie) —Yes, I do think we have a bad di mate —a very raw, uhetzy sort of a climate— don’t you ? The ladies smiler] sardonic, ally nt each other, 1 the indifferent auditors laughed internally, and waited till they got home before they split their side with chach’mation.-— llorfon I‘vit. A Pabaohapii for Bvsixgss Mix.—The time has past for people to sit quietly in their stores, and trust to circumstances for custom ers. The aspect of business has been entirely changed—the old landmarks have been re moved and new channels opened. People should not now sit quietly And gnze upon the dust gathering around their wares, but with Uecvmimg shrewdness place their pens on pa- 1 per, enumerate their articles, mid announce through the advertising columns of widely cir culated papers the quality of their articles, and where they may be found. Men of small capi tal long since discovered this sure road to wealth, and he who does not follow in their wake, will find himself distanced. (FROM THE XHVV YORK SEWS.) Nothing since the foundation of the city of New York has produced the excitement among all classes that Prof. Wood's Hair Restorative i has done. All classes from the gray and bald headed sire, and the silver-haired matron, down to the sprightly youth and beautiful maiden ‘ with her glossy ringlets, are crowding the De pot at No. 312 Broadway: the former to be permanently restored, and the bitter to posse-,, themselves of that which will prevent the In road of envious time, and cause the appear - auee of youth and beauty to ling jr to the great est age. Besides all the popular Druggists in the country are constantly engaged in dealing out the Restorative to their customers, “and the cry U still they come.” Caution.—Beware of worthless inventions, as several are already in the market, called by ‘ different names. Use none unless the words (Professor Wood's Hair Restorative, Depot St. Louis. M ■ and New York.) are blown in the ■ bottle.
