AGBICTLTUKAL HINTS FOB THE MONTH.
The Plantation.—As spoil as Cotton be- ,
gins to open freely, iliunst be gathered without
delay. Avoid picking iinniediutely alter n
shower, lest the lint should be dirty. See that
vonr Gin and Press are in complete order, and
send no cotton to market that bus not received
the most careful handling throughout.
Cow Penn should be gathered and put away
during the brief intervals of leisure from cotton
picking. The vines of the late planted Peas ,
may also be cut when the pod is just forming,
and cured for hay. Carefully save seed of all '
valuable sorts.
Corn may be cut up and saved, as directed
in our last number.
Winter Oiitu, Rye, Barley, Clorer and Ln
cerne. may be sown the latter part of this
month.
Turnip*. for a fall crop, mnst now be sown.
Without delay. Ruta Baga. Yellow Aberdeen,
Norfolk, Early Flat, Dutch, Globe, and Stop 1
Jaiaf Red Top Turnips, are all valuable varie
ties—the two first being the best for stock and
keeping. See direction for sowing Turnips, in
our last.
Hay.—ln addition to the Corn-stalk and un
pulled fodder spoken of iu oar last number:
Sweet Potato vines and tops of Pinders make a
tolerable rough forage, if cut and cured before
they begin to wither. All Crab (or (Topi
Grass. Crowtoot and other gra—es, must be
cut when in blosSoin, and carefully cured, w itli 1
ns little exposure to the s;m as possible, to be
ot any value for Imv. The dried np and with
ered gras, often pulled lor hay late i:i the sea
son. is almost utterly valueless.
Wetland may now lie drained, woodlands
prepared for pasturage, weeds a id brush grub
bed up. &<•„ &«. • 1
Winter Foray,’.— Asa greea crop, try Wii it,
s iwn thick in three icet drills, on dwp :y plow- 1
edamtrich land. It will give your animals j
green food nearly all winter bearing repeated
cuttings.
Tug Gardes.— Turnip*. of all kinds, if not
already sown, must i»e put in without d lay.

Tug Fmtit Orchard. —.¥<•«• land, elevated
and not too rich, is most suitable for Orchard-,
mid to those who have neither the time or the
means to grub up and entirely clear the ground
before planting, we suggest the following plan ,
for speedily replacing a lorest with a produc
tive Peach or Apple orchard: Cut off all
wood and brush very dearth early in the fall,
burning to ashes all the logs that you cannot ,
remove, ami leaving all stumps very low.—
Then stake oft’ your land the proper distances,
and dig holes six feet across and two fe. t deep,
throwing the surface mould on one side mid
the subsoil on the other. Rake into the bot
tom of the hole n bushel or more of the sur
rounding loose, top soil, leaves. Ac. —fill up to
the proper height with the surface soil first
thrown out, mid plant your tree carefully, heap
ing up the subsoil slightly about the trunk and
over the roots, to allow for the natural settling
of the earth. Your tree being now planted
and furnished with a supply of food in the hole,
immediately within its reach, the after-culture
may bo as follows: The first spring, early,
plow aud cross-plow the young orchard with
long rooters, keeping beyond the holes in which
the trees are planted, and carefully avoiding
all injury to the trunk or brunches. Sow Cow
Peas broadcast in the open space between the
trees, and keep the earth loose an 1 mellow
about the a pronged hoe. If mul
ching material can be obtained, apply it thick
ly after the first hoeing, ns far ns the roots of
the trees extend. This wilt obviate the neces
sity of any further working for the season.— 1
When the Pens ripen, pick mid save them,
turning the vines under mid sowing another
crop to be gathered in the same manner.—
These repeated plowings and cros—plowings,
with llie abundant, supply of nutritive matter
furnished by the decomposing Pen viuvs. mid
an occasional dressing of ashes, will insure the
most vigorous and healthy growth of the trees,
ami force them into early mid prolific bearing.
Other low crops, such a- Sweet Potatoes and
Pinders, may afterwards be grown profitably
in the orchard, mid the vines returned to the
soil as above recommended. We confidently
recommend a trial ot this plan to those who
desire the quickest and most satisfactory re
turn tor their labor in Fruit raising, mid who
have no old land elevated enough, or other
wise suitable. November and Beeember are
the best months for planting trees. Particu
lar directions for planting Trees, Grape Vines,
(tc., in our next.— South. Cultirator.
Important Decision.—The Supreme Court
of New York has decided, that a creditor hns
no right to take a transfer of a life rusuranee
failicy, and paying the premium thereon to up
hold the same for hiluself. This a very impor
tant decision, and defeats what lias be n here
tofore regarded os one of the most important
aims of life insurance.
