LAND WARREN T 9
Since the withdrawal of the lands in Kansan
nnd Nebraska Irom public sale, land warrants
have greatly depreciated in price, and a still
further decline is looked for. As there arc no
lands of iin|»prtpnce now subject to public en
try, land warrants will’scarcely bo purchased
by any one, except those who buy upon spec
ulation for future sales.
The following are the current rates paid by
dealers, who are buying only in small lots;
For 160 acre warrents, 78, eta. per acre.
For 80 do 76 do.
For 120 do 68 do.
For 40 do 90 do.
Goon Naws foe the Wine Drinkers.
Claret will be cheap as well as excellent this
year, the crop having been abundant. Several
large ship loads have already been discharged,
and to-day a large ship will ‘■break stowage,”
nnd, before having a "swept hold,” will be re
lieved of no less than fifteen hundred tons of
wine! That ship must have been pretty stiff,
or she wonld have capsued with all the liquor
in her on that Voyage. Think of that, fifteen
hundred tons of wine—as much as fifteen hun
dred moderate men consume in a life time.—
Sew (Meant Trac IMta,
An Irish RErxirrKß.—The Irish mind is »
nev'er-faiting sonre? of wit. The following is the
latest specimen:
Dutoick , is Baggage master on the
Georgia Hail Road, and always attentive to his
business. A few evenings since, while at his
post, he was accosfed by an excited passenger,
who in a rude and boisterous manner demand
ed repeatedly toknow whereabouts of his trunk.
Pat, after several times replying to the inter
rogatory, at length lost his patiefice, and thus :
put an end to the stranger’s troublesome ques
tioning : “Ooh, iiristher, I wish in my soul yon
were the Elephant instead of a Jackass, for
thin you’d have your thrunk always under yer
eye.—-ft. Intelligencer.
A Tax on Hoops.—One of the drollest sto- '
rias in the late foreign pafiers is one to the ef
fect that the managers of Belgian balls and the '
lesson of Belgian ball rooms, having found, to
their grief, that the vast circuinfreuces of crin
olines have diniinislied the number ot dancers,
have commenced charging an extra admission
fee for ladies whose skirts went beyond a cer
tain mark, nnd this murk is determined by a
erinoli-metfe. “At a ball given on Sunday, 23d,
Montgomery, one female was measured and
<4iarged an extra7s centimes; another person,
ti an economic disposition, prefered reducing
her crinoline by taking out two hoops.”
Cost or rns Africans. —A correspondent
of the Charleston Mercury states that the Af
ricans found on board the Echo, which was
recently captured off the coast of Cuba, by the
Dolphin, were percbased on the West Coast of
Africa at from fifty cents to one dollar a head : i
and costing scarcely more than ton or fifteen
dollars to Ik- delivered on the coast of Cuba.
The cost of returning them to their native jun
gles will be about a thousand dollars a piece.
Interestin'!! Calculation. —A Yankee is a
calculating institution, ami nothing comes u
long that he does not aubjeet to the ordeal of
figures, in some way. Ths last instance that
has come under our observation is the follow
ing, wbioli occurs in the course of some edito
rial speculations upon the comet:
Its tail is at lea-t 6,000,1)00 miles in length.
To grease that tail, it is estimated, would
use up a basin of fat as large as Lake Erie, and
give constant employ ineut to 60,000 "daubers,”
for 10 years.
Trlkohapii to France.—The Paris press
speaks of tfie necessity which exists for France i
to lay d >w i a ts-legrnp'i to the I’ lite 1 Statu..,
if she w ishes to mamlaiii u.diminished her
preM-nt commercial relations with the Ameri
can continent. It declares France is u.Av too
<L-pemleut mi England for her eonimimicutions
with America.

set to music by Emile Karst, of that city, an I

brary A-sociatiop, .Uy a iron;-• comprising a
lea-ling soprano, contralto, teuor and baritone.
Thu accompaniment is in part or.-bestial a id
part upon the piano. It is considered a great
and striking novelty.
Yellow Fever. —The Mobile piqa-rs of Sun
day. again warn strangers not to visit that city
or New Orleans, tint'll they are advised to do
no, under pain of death from yellow fever.—
Surely human 1 fe must be miserably cheap in
this country when sensible mon, will reckless
ly endanger it by visiting infected cities, when
the chances are fifty to one that they will loose
it by so doing.
lloiisKs Killed bt Eating Ri-sted Oats.— ,
A Canaria paper sa. s that a gentleman recent
ly turned five horse - into a field ot rusted oats,
and they were all found dead the n-'xt morn
ing. Rust is supposed to bo oi led by a very
minute insect which lives the juice of the
straw and the rust is ;..s poisonous secretions.
Melancholy Death.—A gentleman by the
name of J.i„ Brooks did at the residence of a
fric;«d in Rankin county, Mississippi, a few
days ago, under very painful circumstances.— '
He went from Mobile to be married, but was
seized with the yellow fever, and instead of j
reaching the Hymeneal altar, found an untime
ly grave.
A Determined Avenger.—ln New York,
on Thursday, Robert Bell tired adieavy loaded
pistol at Robert Stephens, but missed him. nnd
was imprisoned for the act. Stephens had se- !
duced Miss Sophia Bell, and the prisoner came ;
to this country from Ireland, to w ipe out the
stain on his family.
The Camkik. —Forty-nine of the camels bo 1
longing to the United States are now- at Camp
Verde, sixty miles from San Antonio. Only j
one of those imported has died, while ten have
been added by birth. These young American
born camels thrive well, and promise to grow
np equal in all respects to those inqiorted.
Postmasters Removed.—The postmasters at
Belleville, Galeaburgh and Springfield (Ill.)
were to-day removed by order of the Presi
dent All the Illinois postmasters who were
ap|n>intod by the Executive have now been re
moved, with the exception of those at Joliet
and Jacksonville. — Staten.
For Douglas.—Nearly all the Democratic,
and “independent” newspapers in Louisiana
are said to be for Douglas in preference to Bu
chanan. Slidell ami Benjamin are the other
side. Soule is regarded as the leader of the
Douglas Democracy of the State.
Patavla CißcriT.—The following candi
dates are before the people for Judge and So
licitor of the Pataula Circuit nt the January
election. Democratic party—John A. Tucker,
of Stewart, for Judge —Francis D. Bailey, of
Terrell, for Solicitor. American Party—Jas.
L. Wimberly, of Stewart, for Judge, and Jes- [
se Norwood, of Chattahoochee, for Solicitor.
Galveston.—The number of deaths in this .
city from yellow fever from its first outbreak
to October 4th were 112. At latest dates the
mortality w as two or three a day.
Judge Hawkins.—The returns from Florida
indicate the re-election of this gentleman to I
Congress by a large majority.
NKwsrAFEB r<’R Sale.—Mr. John T. '.Vag
non, proprietor of the “Southern Nr.tive,”
published at Eufaula. Ala., otters that paper for
•ale. He says, in an advertisement, that “the
office i« well stocked with Job and n< wspuper

or Standing Preas.
HON H V JOHNSON.
The Atlanta Intelligencer pays the following
high and merited tribute to Ex-Gov. Johnson.
It is not overdrawn or more than just:
“Who is not proud of such a man us Her
schel V. Johnson—the "man of golden pur
pose nnd of iron w ill." as the Georgia Plat
form designates him t Who has been more con
spicuous in every fight for twenty years in
Georgia? Who has fallen and risen with the
Democratic, party in storm nnd sunshine—in
adversity ami prosperity, if Herschel V. John
-1 son has not? His voice has been always heard
rallying the broken columns and the discour-
I aged hosts when the battle raged the hottest
and fiercest. The Democracy love him. His
very name is a tower of strength.— Fed. (Inion.
For Ready Money Only.—Talking about
that, lie began, I married a mnn the other day
f>r the third time. Man in my parish. Cap
ital cricketer when he was young enough to
run. What your fee?" said be. Licensed
marriage?’ says I. ‘Guinea, of course,’ ‘l’vegot
■ to bring your tithesin three weeks, sir’ says he.
•Give me tick till then.’ All right,’ says j, and
married him. In three weeks he coiues and
pays his tithes like a man. ‘Now, sir,’ says he,
‘about this marriage fee, sir ? I do hope you
will kindly let me off at half price, for I’ve
married a bitter bad ‘un you'll only please to
take it. She isn't worth a turthing more—on
the word of a man she isn't, sir!’ I looked
hard in his face, mid saw two scratches on it,
and took the half guinea, more out of pity than
anything else. Lesson to me, however. Ready
money—eh ! Ila! ha ! ha! O, yes! ready money
next time.”— Diclenn' Ilmnwhold Horde.

Nervous, Rheumatic, and Neuralgic Affection*, it
has in numerous instances proved highly beneficial,
and in others affected a decided cure.
This is a purely beneficial compound, prepared on
strictly scientific principle*. after the manner of the
celebrated Hollano Professor. Boerhavc. Because of
its great success in most of the European States, its
introduction into the United States was intended
more especially for those of our fatherland scattered
here and there over the face of this mightv country.
Meeting with great success among them, t now offer
it to the American public, knowing that its truly won
derful medicinal virtues must be acknowledged.
1 It is particuln ly recommended to those persons
whose constitutions may have been impaired by the
continuous use of ardent spirits or other forms of dis
sipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds
its way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quick
ening every nerve, raising up the drooping spirit.
■ and. in fact, infusing new health and vigor to the

Notick.— Whoever expects to find this a beverage

CAUTION:
. The great popularity of this delightful Aroma has
induced many imitations, which the public shouly
