Fencing out Ohio rao.M Xew York.—
Pennsylvania interposes at Erie, and tells X.
York and Ohio they shall not cross that State,
without a break of the Railroad guage at Erie.
Wc have thought, hitherto, that it was ainere
local squabble about bread and cheese there—
but the Governor of the great State of Penn
sylvania interposes thus :
MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR BIGLER.
B. F. Sloan, Editor of the Erie Observer:
Your letter is this moment received, and it is
the first reliable information I have had. The
Attorney General has been directed to get an
injunction against the Franklin Canal Company
at the earliest day possible.
My sympathies are with the people of Erie,
and whatever my duties and the laws will per
mit, shall be done for them. If my presence
can be of any service, I will carefully come
out to your place. W*t. Bigler.
The City Councils there have passed a reso
lution inviting Gov. Bigler to visit the city im
mediately.
The plain English of all this—Pennsylvania
means, if possible, to fence out Ohio and tbe
West from access to Xew York.—New York

The “graduations of a French newspaper,”

Elba and returned to France, the Moniteur
announced the event as follows: *
•‘First announcement—‘March 1815. The tnoustcr

run away from Elba.’ Second—"The Corsieon drag

tiger luis shown himself at ti.ib. The troops are ad
vancing ou all sides to arrest his progress. He will
conclude liis miserable adventure by becoming a
wanderer among the mountaius: he cannot possibly
escape.’ Fourth—’The monster has really advanced
as far as Grenoble: we know not to what treachery
to ascribo it.’ Fifth—‘The tyrant is actually at Ly
ons. Fear and terror seized all at his approach.’
Sixth—’The usurper has ventured to approach the
capital to within sixty hours march.’ Seventh—
’Bonaparte is advancing by forced marches: hut it is
impossible he can reach Paris.’ Eighth—’Napoleon
will arrive under the walls of Pans to-morrow.’—
Ninth—The Emperor Napoleon is at Font: iubleau.’
Tenth—’Yesterday evening, his Majesty, the Einpe-
peror, made h» public eutiy, ind i rrived at the
Tuilerius—nothing can exct-id the universal joy!’ ”

Suicide or a Georgian at Marshall,
Texas,—We learn from the Marshall Re
publican that a gentleman named Win. R.
.Moss, from Hancock county. Ga., committed
suicide in the honse of Dr. .Joseph Tylor,
u that place, on the night of the 2<lth ult.,
by cutting his throat with a razor. He ap
pears to have been, for some time previously,
a state of great nervous excitement. His
effects were examined mid found to tunouut
at the aggregate to about 816,Oi*t. The
Itepubhcaii says:
An inquest was held over his body, and
ti.e verutet was rendered, “came to liis death
by bis own baud.” We understand that
Mr. Moss has a mother and sister on the
road to Texas with 120 negroes, of which
4-< belonged to him.
Dr. Taylor has delivered up the means of
Mr. Moss, to two responsible gentlemen in
litis p.ace for safe keeping, for which he

A Fortunate Editor.
A gentleman of the Savannah press came
down here, the other day, captured one of
Leon County’s fairest daughters and, we are
told, will actually carry her off with him. As
the affair has now become a matter of notorie
ty, we may as well give names. The editor
we allude to is no less a person than K. B.
Hilton, Esb., once our foemaii of the Fiori-
dian, but now the accomplished conductor. of
the Savannah Georgian. The fair captive
whom this unfeeling man has actually tied
(with the silken cords of matrimony,] is Miss
Rebecca B. Bradford, daughter of Dr.
Edward Bradford, of this 1 county.
Well, we forgive Mr. Hilton his sins against
us, which arc many ; and wish him and his
beautiful bride all the happiness two congenial
souls may enjoy during a long life of mutual
love and devotion. If that is not a good and
a large wish, be shall never have another from

Truite of 4'hnrlrston,
A correspondent of the Charleston Evening
News contradicts the statement made by Mr.
Trenbolm, in tbe South Carolina Legislature,
aud reiterated by the Charleston papers, that
the wholesale business of Charleston for the
vear 1833 did not exceed in value $1,500,000,
and that it has increasedin 1853 to $20,000,000.
The writer says the amount of merchandise
sold in Charleston in 1833 to thecountry trade,
that is, to those who bought to sell again, was
$4,835,000, while he pots down the trade ol
1853 at Sli.fMD.tMJO. He says:
If merchandise had the same money value at
the present time that it had iu 1833, no doubt
the quantity now sold would amount to or near
$2o,tl00,000. But value and not quantity is
the measure of commerce.
Tho jobbing trade of our city has been
annually ineretising for some years past. 1 Ins
increase has been produced from very natural
causes—a higher degree of intelligence,
energy «ml industry amongst our citizens,.both
commercial and mechanical—a more enlight
ened and liberal banking system—the increase
ot population and extension of railroads, have
alt contributed their quota to the present pros
perous condition of tho City aud btste.

“A piece of news that may not be pleasing to A-

will give them employment, aud because the Austra
lions won’t have them.”
ISrporl of the Controller of Texas.
The Austin Gazette, of the 6th iust., con
tains the report of Controller Shaw, of which
we make a brief synopsis. The receipts of the
State, from Oct. oil 851, to Oct. 31’53, amount
ed to $5,701,205 17, of which sum $5,000,000
were recived from the Government of the
United States in five per cent bonds. The
expenditures for the same period amounted to
$1,735,91»323—leaving a balance iu the Treas
urv of $3 965,301 94.
The total amount of School Fund uow in the
Treasury is $82,19333.
The increase in value of the taxable proper
ty within the State for the last eight years,
but more especially for the past three years,
affords unmistakable evidence of the prosperi
ty and growth of the country. In 1846 the
aggregate taxable property of the State
amounted to $34,391,175; in 1850, $51,814,-
615, and in 1653, $99,155,114—an increase
within three years of almost 100 per cent.

Pills and Ointment, Surinam.—’•Gentlemen,— I beg
to inform you that I considered my son lost to society
in consequence of swollen limbs and ulcerous sores,
with which he was severely afflicted. I have sacri
ficed large sums of money to doctors who have after
w.-rds told me that it was a hopeless case, but at la.-t
I tried Holloway’s Pills, and the result has been so
favorable that it has astonished all who had seen the
deplorable state he was in.

To Professor Hollow: Sir—At the age of 18 my

have been more or less sore, aud greatlj’ inti tuled.
Her agonies were distracting, ana for.mon.hsto

Eve. y remedy that medical men advised w,.s triej,

May 31, 1851.
To Professor Holloway: Sir—Ihavesuffe ed a pe
riod of thirty years from a bad leg. the result of two
or three different accidents at gas works; accompa
nied by scorbutic symptoms. I had recourse to a
variety of medical advice, without deriving any
benefit, and was even told that the leg must be am
putated, yet, in opposition to that opinion, your Pills
and Ointment have effected a complete cure in so
short a time, that few who had not witnessed would
credit the tact.

To Professor Holloway; Dear Si.—My wife had
suffered from bad Breasis for more than six mouths,
and ituriug Ihe whole period had the best medicai

an awful wound in my own leg by youri.nrivall. il
medi’-iue. I determined again to use your Pills and
Ointment, nd therefore, gave them a trial in hir
ease, and lo.tunato it was I did so, for in less than a
inoii'li a p -rfeet cure was effected, and the benefit
that various other branches of my fimilv have de
