undertaking to divide them at all.
We are of the opinion that the
Frees is; mistaken about this. We
think the country is dissatisfied
with the President’s policy, and
will be more disstuisfitui if n is
made 'vi;,porous and decided”.

ANow Policy Demanded*
Fayette Sheriff Sales For
November*
The New York Press calls on
the leaders of the Republican par
ty to “do* something." “AD
thongh the party has been in pow
er over nine months," the Press
■says, "it has not been able to
show any direct results, There is
nothing like a bold and aggressive
policy for a political power just
• coming into power. If the policy
of the Republican party is to be a
tame and timid one, the prspect in
1892 may be guaged by the results
this fail- while the talk of a long
lease of power is rampart nbn-
sense.
It is in this way that the repub-*
lican papers are admitting the seri-
cu mess of the defeat their patty
has just differed,. The party can
not rest upon its record, but must
• make a new one. The admin s ra-?
tion has weakened the party in
stead of strengthening it, and a
new and vigorous party must be
adopted or the republicans will
meet with disaster in 1892.
These are significant admissions
and involve sharp criticism of the
President. But in what has Mr,
Harrison failed.looking at his con
duct from a rebublicau standpoint?
He has dismissed democrats from
office at an unprecedented rate of
-speed. That was what was exs
pected of him and in thorough
-agreement with the views of the
vepubiicay party. He it not open
to criticism from them, unless it be
that they want him to work even
harder than he has done in divid
ing the spoils of office.
In the matter of pensions, too,
the President has done what was
expected of him. He has lessen
ed the sa'egurds against fraud and
increased the pension payments
several million dollars. There is
no evidence that his policy will de
radically changed. The dismissal
of Tanner was necessary to save
the treasury from speedy bankrupt
cy, but the new commissioner will
be “liberal to the boys.”
In the matter of increasing taxes
the President has done what he
could. By treasury rulings he has
doubled the tax on worsteds, has
provoked retaliation from Mexico
by an efiort to prevent the impor
tation of silver-lead ores, and has
taken the position that when the
interpretation of a tax law is in dis
pute the government should col
lect the highest possible rate.
In all these things the PiesiJent
properly represents his party*
The greed for office, for pensions
and for protection, is what makes
the party possible. The president
has done his best to satisfy this
gteed. The ' 'vigorous, decided re
publican policy’’ which the Press
demands can therefore mtan noth
ing but more offices, more pen
sions and more protection, In
other words, the Press' understands
the country to have rebuked the
President for not dividing the
