Hunted by a mountain Lion.
Tom Tanner, who lives at Carbon tin lo,
Colorado, has quite a reputation as n
hunter; but tho other day the order of
things was somewhat reversed, and in
stead of the hunter lie became the hunt
ed. Tanner relates his experience us
follows:
“You see, I was out tryin’ to get n
shot at somethin’ in the way of game,
and hod just got my eyes on as purt.y a
piece of venison as you could lind in a
month’s hunt, when f suddenly run jam
up agin a mountain lion cub ’bout, six
i'eet long.
“The interdnc'ion was so sudden that
it kinder rattled me, and instill o’ tailin'
good aim I made n Hash shot, an’ only
succeeded in cripplin’ him in one o’ hit-
legs. I was just preparin' to give him
another one, when l heard a racket be
hind me, and lookin’ around, saw the
young brute’s mother cornin’ at me.
.She uas lugger ’ll one o’ the Grubb
boys’ Clydesdales, an’, without waitin'
to fool with the cub, .1 shitted down the
side of the mountain, with the old cat a
close second. But the time she thought
she had me foul, ati’was beginuin' t t
reach forme, I stepped on a loose rook,
mi’ ’bout a ton o’ loose dirt an' stuff give
'way under me, an’ 1 took a rough un’-
ttunble go-ns-yoii-ploave slide do ,mi the
side o’ the mountain for « mile or two —
more or less—before. 1 could stop failin’.
“I was bruised an’ b’eedin’ an’ bout
half dead when I re a lied the end of
the tumble, but no mountain lion was
to be seen, an’ I shook hands with my
self for gettin’ off so easy. I s’pose her
jags thought there wouldn’t be enough
of me left to chew on, and went back to
her kid.”
Left on a Rock to Starve.
News of tragical interest comes from
n little rocky island some ways north of
fcierra leone, on the west coast of
Africa. Alcatraz Island has no inhabit
ants and would be perfectly valueless
were it not that it has a considerable
deposit of guano. France thought it
worth while to take possession of the
island, and over two years ago four men
were set ashore there tokeep the French
Hag flying. The men sent to live on the
barren rock entirely pawed out of the
minds of the authorities. One day
recently a document was fished out of a
pigeonhole, showing that over two years
ago four men had been landed on the
island in behalf of the government. No
time was lost in sending a vessel to the
island. It w as estimated that the men
had about six months’ supply of pro
visions when they landed. The only
hope that they were alive was that some
passing vessel had seen their signals of
distress and taken them olf. That hope
was instantly dispelled when the vessel
reached the island.. Only n few minutes
elapsed before the skeletons of the four
men were found stretched upon the
rocks, i hey had perished by inches of
starvation.
Enduring Cold.
Referring to a report current in the
Austrian papers to the effect that Queen
Victoria is in the habit of sleeping with
open windows in winter, and that her
apartments at Wiudsor are so cold that
her attendants and visitors are almost
frozeu, a Vienna daily reminds its read
ers of Empress Maria Theresa’s liking for
the cold. Her apartments were very
rarely heated. SJ)e exposed herself o>
draughts, and her writing table in winter
was so close to the open window that the
snow’ drifted in upon it. It frequently
happened that the hands of the hair
dresser were partially frozen while at
tending to her majesty’s coiffure, and
that the ladies surrounding her august
person literally trembled from cold.
Kaunitz, one of her ministers, never ap
peared before the empress in winter with
out being enveloyeri in furs to escape
taking cold in her draughty apartments.
Lacing The Shoe.
Few people lace their shoes correctly.
About the nearest anybody gets to it j-
to lace as tightly us possible. The cor
rect way is to put your foot, when you
are about to lace your shoe, as much as
possible in the heel of the shoe. You
can do this best by lacing your shoes
with the heel of your shoo resting ou a
chair standing in front of the one you
are seated in. Over the instep the lac
ing should be drawn as tight as possible.
This will hold your foot hack in the
shoe, giving the toes freedom, and pre
venting their being cramped.

A School for Beggars.
Two London boys of thirteen, the chil
dren of respectable parents, were recently
charged with begging. The boys alleged
that a woman trained them and other lads
as beggars, and that she used to keep
their decent clothes and supply them
with rags to go out in. Her own boy, it
is said, was the head of the gang of ju
venile beggars and used to take the
money, which partly went to his mother
and part in refreshments and visits to
music halls. The mother of one of the
ladssaid that she had been to thiswomau
and warned her that if she heard that
her boy’s clothes were kept again she
would lock her up for unlawful posses
sion. The defendants adhered to their
statement about, being supplied with
rags, etc., and the magistrate said that
.if it was true the woman really ought, to
be prosecuted.
