Gbeat Britain', Sir Lowthian Fell
says, saves 4,000,000 tons of coal a ye r
by utilizing the gasjs which once es
caped from furnaces. As the pig iron
made iu this country for 188!) will 1 o
w ithin ten per cent, as much as that made
in Great Britain, the saving hero must
be 3,600,000 to a, or t :n per cent of tho

trifle 11 the saving which will 1 o made
when the slag is used as a fertilizer, tho
waste products of cooking sived, and all
the combustion of coal carried on so as
to utilize the waste products of our
wasteful way of using coal to make heat

'Ulio Use of Coffee.
It is asserted by men of high profes
sional ability that when tho system needs
stimulant nothing equals a cup of fresh
coffee. Those who desire to rescue the
drunkard from his cups will find no bet
ter substitute for spirits than strong, now
made coffee, without milk or sugar. Two
ounces of coffee, or one eighth of 'a
pound, to one pint of boiling water
makes a first class beverage, but the
water must be boiling, uot merely hot.
Bitterness comes from boiling it too
long.
If the coffee required for breakfast be
put in a graniteized kettle over night
and a pint of cold water poured over, it
can be heated to ttie boiling point and
then sot back to prevent further ebulli
tion, when it will be found that, while
its strength is extracted, its delicate
aroma is preserved. As our country con
sumes nearly ten pounds of coffee per
capita, it is a pity not to have it made in
the best manner.
It is asserted by those who have tried
it that malaria and epidemics are avoided
by those who driuk a cup of hot coffee
before venturing into the morning air.
Burned on hot coals it is a disinfectant
for a sick room. By some of our best
physicians it is considered a specific in
typhoid fever.—Epicure.
The I’t-oplo
are not slow to understand that. In order to
warrant their manufacturers In guaranteeing
them to benefit, or euro, medicines must pos
sess more than ordinary merit and curative
properties. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Dis
covery is the only blood medicine sold, through
druggists, under a positive guarantee that it
will benefit or care or money paid for it will
be returned. In all blood, skin and scalp dis
eases, and for all scrofulous affections, it is

case.
Unless a tree bears blossoms In Spring, wo |
may look in vain for Autumn fruit.
There is more Catarrh in tills section of the
country than all other diseases put together,
and until the last few years was supposed to
be incurable. For u, great many years Doc
tors pronounced iL a local di-ease, and pre
scribed local remedies, and by constantly
failing to cure with local treatment, pro
nounced it incurable. Science has proven ca
tarrh to be a constitutional disease, and
thereforb requires constitutional treatment.
