Kentucky is doing nobly in the cause of public education* With a population very little, if any, lar gertlian that of Georgia, she spout $1,500,000 in support of common schools last year, and intends to in crease the appropriation at the rale of 10 percent, a year. Last year there were 111,355 negro cbildreu in the public schools of Kentucky. The white people of that state tax ed themselves $500,000 to educate these children, while the entire ne gro population paid only $12,COO for the education of children, white and black. Similar condi> tions exist in every Southern state, but this imqortant fact seems to have escaped the attention of those who prate of negro oppression in the South.
