ARE RULED BY SUPERSTITION Almost Every Act of a Roumanian, From the Cradle to the Grave, Is Thus Guided, Rouniania is one of the favorite homes of superstition, where supersti tion-: accompany life literally from the cradle to I lie grave. Before a child is christened it must undergo the important ceremony of its first bntli, given in a huge wooden bowl, which also serves as its cradle, at the home of its godmother. If it is a hoy there must be poured Into flie hath a sym bolical mixture of corn, wine and honey; if a girl the bath must con tain feathers from (lie wings of a dove and petals of a rose to serve as a prayer to the Three Spinners, believed to be weaving the child’s destiny, that her footsteps through life may bo as soft as a dove and her face as fair as a flower. A book, a loaf of bread and a rod are offered a boy. If he chooses the hook he will he a scholar; if the bread, he will ho a thrifty, practical, successful man of affairs; if the rod, which is laid on Ills hack, he will he a ne’er do well, is the belief. Wien a man dies there must be placed in Ids coffin a comb, a bit of soap and a coin to pay the fee due Charon, to ferry him over the River Styx. Will she die?” “Slip’s dyed already to get it that color, nurse.” Accept "California” Syrup of Figs only—look for the name California on the package, then - you ore sure your child is having the best and most harm less laxative or physic for the little stomajih.. liver and bowels. Without glass elderly persons would he unable to read or sew, short-sight ed persons would go about almost blind. Without glass we should know nothing more about the stars than was known by the ancients, nothing about the structure of matter, and we should not even suspect the existence of microbes. Without glass we should have no photographs, no moving pictures and no illustrations in our newspapers. Without glass we. could have no elec tric light bulbs, no X-rays, no colored windows in our churches, no thermom eters or barometers. Without glass chemists would use porcelain containers, we should drink- out of metal or china mugs, we should let the light into our houses through sheets of mica. “Glass,” says the .Scientific Ameri can, “has been known from antiquity, hut its common use is comparatively recent. This has been spoken of as tlie age of steel; it might equally be pronounced the age of glass.” Some people have just conscience enough to make them miserable. It is not strong enough to control their ac tions and hold them to the right path, but it is too strong to let them walk the wrong way in peace. No race with Coffee prices! FARM’ POOLTRY VENTILATION OF HEN HOUSE For Success With Poultry There Must Be an Abundance of Fresh Air Without Drafts. Poultry raisers have come to real ize that the ventilation of the poultry house is a very Important matter. There must be an abundance of fresh air without extrema heat or cold, and without dampness and draft. Proper conditions cannot be had with the makeshift, wrongly used ventilators frequently employed. One method, which has proved suc cessful Is to use tlie straw air strain er. A second ceiling is built about six inches below tlie regular ceiling, in the form of a latticed framework. A trapdoor in the center of this makes it possible to change the straw which Is packed between tlie lattice and the original ceiling. Vents, or wide, low COVER WINDOW WITH BURLAP Most Excellent Plan to Keep Out Wind at Night While Fowls Are Roosting. If the poultry house is narrow so that die wifid blows in through the open windows on rbe fowls on the most, put a piece of burlap over tin* open space, at night, hut do not close tli^ windows until (lie weather gets cold. FATTEN FOWLS FOR MARKET Poultry Will Sell for Higher Price Per Pound Because of Increase In Weight. If any stock Is to be sent In market lie sure that it Is fattened well before It is shipped, It will pay to do this because the poultry will sell for a higher price per pound and it will weigh more. Every hair on scalp shortly shows more I life, vigor, brightness, thickness and color.—Adv. The National Law. “Do you know figures give over a thousand fires in New York every year aj the result of throwing away lighted cigars and cigarettes?” “Weil, you know, where there is so much smoke there must be some fire.” BOSCHEE’S SYRUP. Muslin Ventilators Can Be Used in the Poultry House to Secure Abun dance of Air Without Either Drafts or Extremes of Temperature. Openings, must be cut in (he side of the house as close under the eaves ns possible. The air, entering at these vents, filters through the straw, and thus into the poultry nouse. No drafts are possible, and (tie tempera ture is kept very nearly constant. The straw also absorbs a great deal of moisture. Another method, in rather wide use, is to cover an ordinary window frame with muslin, instead of using glass. An Improvement on this type of ven tilator is shown at the right of the drawing. A light wooden frame cov ered with muslin is hung from a wire, which serves as a track. The frame can thus he moved sideways over or away from the window opening. Screw eyes on the frame allow it to slide easily over the wire. The wire itself may he fastened either to screw eyes or over blocks at either end. To the left Is shown n similar frame, mov ing up and down. In this case it will he necessary to arrange some means of holding the frame at the height de sired. Either the pegs that fit Into holes in the wall, or a hook fitting into screw eyes, placed at various heights in the wall, may lie used for this pur pose. The advantage of the air strainers over muslin-covered frames is that tlie latter have to be adjusted accurately to the weather, while the air strainer requires no attention whatever.—J. T. Bartlett, Fort Collins, Colo., in Popular Mechanics Magazine. A cold is probably the most com mon of all disorders and when neglect ed is apt to be most dangerous.
