STATE NEWS BRIEFLY TOLD Savannah.—Currents of flowing oil underneath the olty of Savannah are among tho possibilities being invosti* gated just now. Recently tho city has bored three great artesian wells, P. D. Boler, of tho firm which has been ■inking artesian wells here, found suf ficient evidence, it is said, to warrant tho bringing of an expert geologist to Savannah to make thorough testing of the indications, Atlanta.—A verdict of $10,000 for damages sustained in a railroad acci dent was rendered by a jury in tho civil division of the city court of At lanta in fuver of W. E. Paul, a switch- man on the Central of Georgia. Di rector General of Railroad Hines vas the defendant. The case was tried before Judge IT. M. Reid and the plain tiff was represented by Attorneys Jes- ■le Wood and James L. Moore. Oeilla.—Mrs. Jacob Purvis, one of the best known women of Irwin coun- . ty, was instantly killed when she jumped from a burning automobile. Mrs. Purvis, with her husband and three-year-old daughter, were motoring to Oeilla from their home a few miles west of here. A newspaper in the iroad lodged in the engine of the car und caught fire. Mr. Purvis attempted to stop the machine, but Mrs. Purvis jumped while it was traveling at good speed. Her neck was broken by the falL Atlanta.—Resolutions indorsing the stand of the union painters, plumbers, steam fitters, and glass workers now »n strike in Atlanta, were passed at a meeting of the Atlanta Building Trades council, held at the Labor tem ple, and a motion was adopted to place the matter of further action in ihe hands of the executive committee ®f the council. The council voted to give the strikers its moral support and whatever financial assistance is necessary in the conduct of their walk out. Savannah.—Following a slight acci dent to a plane at the Daffin Park binding field, the first to occur in or near Savannah and the first mishap. to befall this plane after making more than 500 trips and carrying hundreds of passengers, Mayor Stewart notified officers and aviators generally that they will not be allowed hereafter to fly over the territory embraced in the city limits. The mayor said planes bad been sailing unsually low and that lit will be only a matter of time until .■somebody is hurt. Griffin.—It has been reported at a meeting of the citizens of Griffin and Spalding county by the chairman of the county commissioners, Hon. J. E. Wallace, that the county sustained about $10,000 damage from recent Roods to the roads and bridges, hut that there is every evidence that this will he overcome by the prompt ac tion of several gangs of repair men who are being sent out under instruc tions from,the county commission and Che new supervisor of roads. Chair man Wallace also reported that all permanent concrete road work had UKKra delayed about ten days by the recent heavy floods. Atlanta. — An appropriation of $22,- 000 was authorized by the finance committee of council for immediate purchase of improved machinery for /street paving. Money for the purpose was made available by anticipating $28,205.12 from general tax income, and including 22 per cent to which 4he schools are entitled. Action of the committee in voting the large expendi ture to equip the construction depart ment witli new mcahinery was based ■an. observation of the performance of .similar machinery which is now being acsed by the Broolcs-Callaway company 'ha repaving Edgewood avenue for the adty. Atlanta.—Asking $150,000 for the toss of her eyesight, Mrs. Catherine Bristol of Baltimore, formerly of At lanta, brought suit for that amqunt against John Keiley, wealthy Atlan- San, alleging that she is now blind as idle result of alcohol poisoning in Bal- (dinqre last November, which proved total for Miss Lucile Sharp, an At lanta girl. The suit was filed in the Fulton superior court by Attorney Ern- C. Buchanan of Atlanta, and sets •at that Keiley gave the petitioner jroud alcohol to prevent her giving tes timony to the fact that he had made threats against the life of Miss Sharp, who ie alleged to have died mysteri ously in the apartments of the defend ant in Baltimore. E.r „ Colonel GovernofsStaff Tennessee On October 8, 1918, Sergeant Alvin York and seven privates, advancing on a German position m the Argonne, faced an entire machine gun battalion. Official Records show that York killed 20 Germans with his automatic pistol and rifle, captured 132 prisoners, and put 35 machine guns out of action. York received the highest American military decoration— the Congressional Medal of Honor. Upon his return from France, the Tennessee Legislature commissioned him a Colonel, for life, on the Governor’s staff.
