The council, as a result of the Swiss referendum, decided to se^ lect Geneva as the seat of the league assembly, instead of Brussels, which would have been chosen had Switzer land voted adversely. Horatio Bottomley, the anti-Ameri can British member of parliament and publicist, takes another shot at Amer ica in his magazine, John Bull, by pub lishing a “demand” that Great Brit ain forbid the United States to build any mor* battleships without the al lies’ consent. Horatio Bottomley, in his paper, “John Bull,” published in London, says: “I want our debt to America to he paid, but whether she joins the league of nations or not, we must notify her that she must not build any more battleships without the con sent of the allies. I personally scent danger ahead, for I See no sign that the United States will reciprocate our friendship. Instead, I see only brag gart insolence, swaggering unchecked (through the wastes of mendacity; all signal proof of the truth of my as sertion hat basically American ideal ism is simply another name for Yan kee bluffs.” Two thousand troops rrom England .were landed at Bantry recently and immediately distributed throughout West Corn, where they will be sta tioned at points five miles apart. Repetition by Representative Mad den, Republican, of Ilinois, in. the house of his assertion recently that Confederates were traitors threatened a clash between him and Southern members, who gave the “lie” to his epithet. House Republicans, in party caucus, have come out squarely for enactment of soldier relief as advocated by the American Legion. Associate Justice Holmes, while rendering an opinion in the Supreme court in collection with a personal in jury case, said that, so far as he knew, the fathers of the constitution were not opposed to “strong drink.” The justice added that he could not be lieve for a moment that, apart from the eighteenth amendment, special constitutional principles exist against strong drink. The interstate commerce commis sion has taken its first step toward breaking the freight blockade. Tele graphic appeals have been sent all state railroad and public service com missions, urging them to join hand3 with the government in lifting the burden, while the commission’s force of inspectors has been put to work to help get accurate data respecting conditions at critical points.
