Early on the morning of April 15th, our community was filled with sad ness by the death of Brother Tom Jenkins, wo had been in feeble health for several years, not able to attend church, but he bore his long sickness with Christian patience He joined the Baptist church at Fayetteville in his younger days and Iter moved his membership to The Rock Baptist Church, where it remained until his death. He was born July 21, 1840, being nearly eighty years old at the time of his death. He was married March 27, 1869, to Miss Mary Cleckler; ten chil dren bless this happy union, five of whom survive him. | Brother Jenkins was an honest man, a good citizen, a kind husband and a loving father. He followed the ad vice of the Apostle Paul in his sayings, ‘ Owe no man anything except to love one another.” He fought four years in the Confederate army, and on the battlefield as well as in the peaceful walks of life. He displayed the truest Christian citizenship, cheerfuly doing anj r service and ready to make any his country. .sacrifice for the good of his people or He was loyal to his church and its every interest. Brother Jenkins leaves a wife, three boys, two girls, fifteen grandchildren and one sister, besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn his death. “Soldier of God, well done; Rest from thy loved employ; The battle fought, the victory won, Enter thy Master’s joy.” MRS. Advertise in this paper. The teachers of the county attend ing the summer school at Carrollton were Miss Mary Alford and Miss Lil lian Hoore of the Brooks school. Miss Stella Sewell of the Rest school, Miss Jessie Miller of the Little Flock school, Claud Landrum of Bethany school, and Miss Lona Martin of the Woolsey school. Supervisor J. O. Martin with a fac ulty composed of instructors from the G. N. I. C„ the State Normal and the State College of Agriculture were in charge and I consider it the best school ever held at Carrollton. Teachers who did not attend may have valid excuses for not doing so, but I fear these excuses will not bene fit the pupils in their charge. A few of our teachers will attend summer schools elsewhere. Statistics of the bureau of education give the per capita costs of maintain ing‘the schools of the several states as follows: Four states pay over $12 pe rcapita; fourteen states pay over per capita; eleven states pay over $3 $9 per capita; fourteen pay over $6 per capita; six states pay less than $3. Georgia being one of the six pay ing less. Georgia’s per capita was $2.59. These figures were expendi tures’ for years 1917-18. Carroll county has twenty rural school buildings now in process of erection under plans furnished by the department of education. We have none. j Is it possible that the people of Car- roll county have been more prosper ous than we? The new school code is. one of the books to be read before the examina tion as questions will be based on the school laws. Copies of codes can be obtained at office of superintendent; also new manuals. t I would be very glad to go into any community where a class of illiter ates can be formed and give them such instruction as I am capable of giving. This unfortunate condition has been eliminated in Campbell county.
