WINDER, JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25,1900. Motive; Money Not Philanthropy. In the absurd publications with which compress owners fill certain Southern papers they fail to inform'the public that their motive is not pnilanthropy but dollars. Long accustomed to make big profits out of the necessity of reduc ing the old bale’s a’ze by a second com pression, they had come to believe that cotton is grown in order that it may be compressed. The farmer, however, does not labour sarly and late merely to pro vide a fat living for a privileged class. Hj sells his cotton to the man who will give him the most money, and he has it baled in the way it cost him the least. 11 he is within ream* 01 a Rouuuuvp Date plant, he hauls his cotton there because he knows that braving it putin Round lap bales the burlap covering used will cost him about 50 cents per bale less than bagging and ties, and that his cotton, not needing to be recompressed, will sell for a premium more than sufficient to pay the bailing charge. He knows, too, that if the tire? should ever come when it will not pay mm to have his cotton put up in Roundlap bales he can have it baled iu lome other way that will pay him.
