“THEY SAY.”
People Will Talk—They Get Started
and Never Seem to Know
When to Stop.
We went over to Jefferson Satur
day and found that some of our
good friends there are imbued with
the idea that we are inclined to
knock.
We wish to set ourselves right,
so here arid now rise to declare that
the Avay people talk about that
town is a shame.
Why, there were fellows on the
streets over there who told us there
was not a man in town who knew
how many cases of smallpox had
been there; that to their certain
knowledge there had been at least
45 to 60 cases; that a family of
eight just picked up and moved
while it was full of smallpox; that
there are seven cases of the disease
now in the negro quarters; that the
mill owners had run the fumigator
out of factory town, telling him
they would attend to all the small
pox in that section; that a white
map and a negro were sent out of
thfc'county jail to the road gang,
and when they went to put the
snackles on them they w-ere all
broke out with smallpox and are
now lying under a tent by the
roadside near Commerce; that all
quarantine meant was to say to the
inhabitants, “If you got smallpox,
stay at home;” that a man was
building a house and folks told
him, “Don’t you let old man Ram
sey come about you any more,
’cause one o’ his boys broke out to
day” (Friday).
We never saw any smallpox, and,
of course, don’t know whether there
