PRESIDENT BARRETT
Outlines Scope of farmers* Union
Agricultural College.
The Farmers’ Union News has
asked nietooutline briefly the scope
and mission of the great Farmers’
Union Agricultural College,to which
the current issue is so largely de
voted.
To discuss these subjects in detail
would he to elaborate the agricul
tural proolem in the South and ihe
nation, for the scope and the mis
sion of our school aim at no less
pretentious an object than the half
way revolutionizing "f rural life
everywhere.
What is the matter with the
country today? Boys and young
men, in many in-t.-una s the cream
of the population, are leaving it in
ash ady army for the cities. And
this, in spite <>f the fact that the
country life on the farm offers
at this ino*t'.- nt grt iter material re
war;- and a more pleasant environ
ment than at any period in their
history.
Science and education have re
volutionized agriculture. They
have either eliminated or materially
modified trie round-about and
spend-thrift methods of yesterday.
If their lessons were universally
applied, we would 1m; raising pro
ducts in the South and elsewhere at
a cost infinitely less than that now
obtaining, and we would he doing
it at the expense of much less labor
and travail.
The march of invention and of
civilization have also pushed hack
the isolation and the loneliness that
once meant life on the farm. Every
where good roads is a paramount
issue. The rural free delivery ser
vices is drawing the farmer and his
family yet closer to the centers of
activity. The rmal telephone and
the newspapers are reenforcing those
influences that are operating to
make easier and more profitable the
surroundings of the farmer.
And yet, in the face of these
widespred transformations,and they
have barely begun their eventual
dimensions, it becomes increasingly
difficult to keep men of the right
sort on farm. The lot of the men
who remain there is not half so
pleasant and profitable as it should
he, considering that the farmer is
the foundation of prosperity and
moral welfare in America.
The Farmers’ Union has long
realized these conditions. Its work
lias already done much to help each
toward solution.
But now wo aro going to attack
them where they grow, where they
aro fed.
Wo purpose educating country
boys and young men so that they
shall beeotne each a loader, oaeh a
missionary for business agriculture,
for advance in thinking, in com
mercial and working methods, in
education and intelligence and in
living in their respective com
munities.
We expect to show them how to
convince their neighbors that both
duty and self-interest lie, not in
abandoning, nut in remaining on
the farm and bitching to its myriad
activities the skill and the cunning
and the ellieieney of twentieth cen
tury standards and conceptions.
The fanner is not now educated
for his profession as the doctor, the
lawyer, and the business men are
educated for their professions.
We are striving to remedy that
omission, and that is the scope of
this enterprise.
We are working, not so much for
today, or for tomorrow, the im
mediate tomorrow and the far to
morrow. We are working for the
welfare of every member of the
Farmers’ Union, all ages, both
sexes, in all conditions of life. It
is a war in which the interest of
every man is equal, and in which
his duty is measured only by his
patriotism and his love of his fellow
man.— -Charles S. Barrett, in
Faimers’ Union News.

we can advertise that we are ready.
Ready to cater to the good taste
