THE “‘FLU.”
By Walt Mason.
Influenza, labeled Spanish,
came and beat me to my knees;
seven doctors couldn't banish
from my form that punk dis
ease; for it’s not among the
quitters; vainly doctors pour
their bitters into ailing human
critters ;they just sneeze and
swear and sneeze. Said my doc
tor, “ Ihave tackled eevry sort
of ill theer is; I have cured up
people shackled by the gout and
rheumatiz; with the itch and
mumps I’ve baffled, and my tri
umphs have been tattled, but
this ‘flu” stuff has me rattled,
so I pause to say G. Whiz
am burning, I am freezing, in
my little truckle bed; I am
cussing, I am sneezing, with a
jfoultice on my head; and the
doctors and the nurses say the
patient growing worse is, and

WHY EVERY MAN SHOULD INSURE
IN THE NEW YORK LIFE
BECAUSE It has an honorable record of
seventy-four years.
BECAUSE Its policies protect a million
families.
BECAUSE Its admitted assets amount to
$995,057,284.86. Its legal liabil
ties amount to $522,776,414.30.
It holds in reserve for dividends
and contingencies $172,310,870.-
56.
BECAUSE It has over 755 million dollars in
Policy Reserve Funds as calcu
lated by the New York State In
surance Department.
BECAUSE It will pay in dividends in 1919
over 32£ million dollars.
BECAUSE It is purely mutual. It has no
capital stock. All of its assets,
surplus and earnings belong to
its policy-holders.
BECAUSE It believes in publicity. It files
its Annual Report with the De
partment of Commerce of the
United States, with the Insur
ance Department of the State of
New York, with each of the
State Insurance Departments in
the United States (except the
of Texas, where on account of
hostile laws it does not not do
business) and with the Govern
ments of most of the civilized
countries of the world.
BECAUSE Its policies are free from restric
tions as to travel, residence and
occupation, contain liberal guar
antees, and the Company’s rec
ord for the prompt settlement of
claims is second to no other
company.

of the folks who should be dead.
Doom lias often held the cleaver
pretty near my swan-like neck;
I liav had the chills and feve till
my system was a wreck; 1 have
had the yaller janders, foot and
mouth disease and glanders,
and a plague they from Flan
ders on an old windjamme’s
deck. But this measly influen
zy has all other ills outclassed;
it has put me in a frenzy, like a
soldier who’s been gassed; if the
villanous invntor this my lodge
of pain should enter I would
use the voice of Stentor till he
had been roundly sassed. May
the influena vanish! Of all ail
ments it’s the worst; but I don’t
believe it’s Spanish —havn’t
thought so from the first; on
my couch of anguish squirmin’,
I’ve had leisure to determine
that the blamed disease is Ger

cursed.
TO COUNTY AGENTS.
Recently there has come to
our notice ,through advertise
ment and through contact with
agents in the field, a scheme for
selling plans and for a patented
system of curing sweet pota
toes. While we have nothing to
say for or against this system,
we feel it is our duty to bring to
your notice the fact that these
plans are being put on the mar
ket and advertised as “recom
mended by government agents.”
Asa matter of fact, the plans
referred to have not Keen en
dorsed by the Federal Govern
merit or by the U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture. While the
system referred to may be a de
sirable one, yet in justice to
those who may be interested in
sweet potato storage, it seems
that, inasmuch as the depart
mei.t, as you know, lias sweet
potato storage house plans and
spe ifications for free distribu
tion they should lie familiarized
with this fact. The bouse rec
ommended by this department
is very simply and cheaply con
structed and requires only ordi
nary care to make it a success.
Thee is no reason why farmers
should spend money for plans
and specifications when the
department will furnish free of
cost, simpler plans which will
reduce the expense and risk of
storing and curing to a mini
mum. - •
You will undoubtedly receive
literature from these companies
in the near future which wii
tempt to prove to you that
houses built from plans fn
nished by the department ha
been unsuccessful when com
pared with the results of tests
supposedly obtained and vouch
ed for by government agents
in these patented systems. Do
not be misled by such state
ments.
For plans and specifications
for the houses recommended by
the U. S. Bureau of Markets,
the department pleas write to
Washington, D. C. to the Bu
reau of Markets, 319 Connally
Building, Atlanta, Ga. Either
of these offices will be glad to
furnish information on the
method of operation.
Please call this matter to the
attention of your growers and
to your boards of trade and
chambers of commerce, in order
that they may be forewarned
and prevented from spending
money for something which
they can secure without cost.
Should you have infomation
as to the activities of these com
panies in which they, in order to
boost their proposition, make
statements derogatory to the
house recommended by the de
partment, we would thank you
fo giving us such information.
Thanking you for your co-op
eration, I am,
Yours very truly,
J. Phil Campbell,
Director.
