Selfishness.
I kept nil my wealth —and 1 mourn
my loss;
For gold, in a skeleton hand, turns
to dross.
Love, friendship and gratitude
might I have bought.
But l kept my wealth till it moul
dered to naught.
Pleasure.
I spent all my gold—l danced and
1 sang—
The palace 1 built, with hilarity
rang;
Plays, revels and frolics from even
to dawn—
But l lie here with nothing—l
spent it. it’s gone
Avarice.
I loaned my good money—at
grasping per cent —
’Twas I who got all that you kept
and you spent :
While l counted my Millions,
Death plundered me bare —•
And this grave that ( sleep in be
longs to my heir.
Charity.
It was little I had. and f gave all
my store
To those who had less, or wko
needed it more;
And ! came with Death laughing,
for here at the grave.
In riches uumeasured I found
what i gave!

Why Should Every Baptist Sign a
Five-Year Pledge?
Because —
1. These pledges will he held by the local churchli, where.we are
members, and where adjustments can he made, it' necessary. We will
not he dunned by some far-away agency.
2. Because it’s for Christ and his cause. We can afford to tie up
with our Saviour with our property for five years, lie has lied up with
us with all hehasthrou gh all eternity.
3. Because it’s the exercise in religion and for Christ of the same
sort of business policy we have followed in everything in life. We buy
homes, lands, autos, bank stock, government bonds, even the necessi
ties of life, on lime, and hind ourselves to pay. We build our great
business houses, our churches, and school buildings on time, and tie
up for tlnm! in one way or another. It’s faith—it‘s for ourselves. Let s
do it for < lod.
4. Because of the great fellowship in it. We get in with our broth
ers and sisters andco-operateinniaking possible the greatest undertak
ing for Cod in all Baptist history. W’e all are spiritual democrats,
and must go with our brothers in a great forward movement.
5. It’s the only way our people can do a really great thing, worthy
of our doctrines and our opportunities to meet the needs of a sin
ruined world. We can't pay 75 million in cash in one year, but we
can secure it by our honor, and let our hoards plan for great things.
Remember that all the great things Southern Baptists have ever done
have hee’n on the long-time pledge basis: Tlili .ludsori Centennial, by
the Foreign Board; the Church Building Loan Fund, by the Home
Board; the endowment of our seminaries; the building of nearly all
of our colleges and universities and church houses. It is the only way
we can plan to put over big things. As we have done it this way tor
the separate causes, let’s hunch all the causes in one and sign up for
five years.
t>. Because of what we owe to Cod. anyway—all we have is his. W e
are only stewarts and trustees for a little while. Il will all soon pass
1o others. Let’s pledge it. and administer on our own estate. We owe
it to Christ \vl]o did not count the cost in saving us.
7. Because of < 'lirist \s cross, his blood, hliis atonement, for us in sav
ing us. keeping us. blessing us. calling us to high privilege and solemn
duty. Because of the lost, ignorant, sinning, suffering world at our
doors, crying for the help our money can give. Will wc withhold our
best from Christ since lie needs it in reaching a lost world'?

me that I may he able to walk in
