though tin- Republican national
committee has adjourned its ses
sions here after selecting Chicago
as the place and June 8 as the
time for the national convention,
political circles in the capital Were
kept alive today by the various
booms for Republican presidential
candidates for 1920.
Many Republican leaders have
left for their homes, but a large
number remained for tire meeting
today of the state chairmen, who
have organization questions undeiy
discussion.
Supporters of candidates for the
pr esidential nomination which will
Ik* decided at the Chicago conven
tion. have been unusually active
here during the last few days hut
so far few of the candidates have
appeared formally in the open.
Senator Watson, of Indiana, who
had been advanced as a possible
nominee, in a formal statement,
declared he was not seeking the
nomination and would not permit
ambition to interfere with party
harmony.
Chicago won the convention by
a vote of 44 to 9, St. Louis being
the only competitor when the final
vote was taken.
The committee adopted a reso
lution commending the states
| which have ratified the nationM
I woman \s suffrage amendment and
! urging the other states to do so in
i time to permit women to vote in
jthe 1920 elections. The member
i ship of the various committees,
which will serve during the ap
proaching campaign, was named.
