Notwithstanding the picnic at Snap
ping Shoals, which had become gener
ly known would be held on Saturday
last, was postponed by the committee
on account of rumors that smallpox
was at Conyers and perhaps Coving
ton, quite a crowd assembled at the
Shoals and the progamme previously
itrrar.gpt) for the day was partially car
ried out. The welcome address was
delivered in a faw appropriate re
marks, by Master Bosworth, in a
very creditablo manner for a boy of
hi* age. The crowd was entertained
until the hour of dinner with speeches
from Col's Middlebrooks and Living
ston, of Newton, and Col. Bryans, of
Henry. Mayor Wright, of Jackson,
having been informed that the affair
had been indefinitely postponed was
not prepared, aa were the other orators,
and did not speak. We had the good
fortune to meet with Capt. Walthall and
his pleasent "little” family, of Worth
vino, with whon) we enjoyed a nice
dinner. The day vas disagreeably cool
and windy, and the young ladies in
theireU>ow fleaves, looked, ac they no
doubt were, quite chilly, and but for
the verdure of the beautiful growth that
adorned the hills surrounding and lin
ed the river banks whose branches
kissed the rippling waters of the
“South," and the (air niadens all clad
ing Spring attire the occasion could
have been osJled more appropriately
by any other name than n May-day
picnic. B'e had tho pleasurs of meet
ing that pleasant and agreeable gentle
man, Col. Che* T. Zachry, who in
formal us that he regretted very much
the occaaiu# would be detracted from
oratorkialUf, as Brown of Hampton,
and Ha>le<ef Conyers, speaking editors
for the 4ay had failed to put in an ap
pearenee, and he graciously asked us
at what stage or part of the programme
we desired to be heard. We felt com
plimented at being called fill
the places of men of the calibre of our
brothers of the "fourth estate,” which
of oourse was out of the question ; but
AWeColonel’s interrogative demanded
an answer and after due deliberation,
wo cheerfully consented to respond to
—it was’nt exactly a dinner born, but
we all knew what it nieut whon the
Colonel made the announcement from
tho stand about one o'clock, and It was
then as before stated, that our appeti
tive faculties were demontrated to
Captain Walthall.
