MINUTES COUNTY SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION The Butts County Sabbath School Convention met at Cedar Rock May Ist, 1908, and was called to order by the President, j ji Mills, who read the 22nd Psalm, which was followed by song, and prayer by J. Matt McMichael. The secretary being absent, J. 0. Gaston was elected secretary protem. Then followed the calling of the roll and reading of the minutes which were adopt ed after a small correction. Re ports were heard from the various Sunday schools represented. Macedonia was represented by Mr. and Mrs. Will Jolly. Stark: J. M. McMichael, J. E. McMichael, and Sam McMich- Cedar Rock: R. S. McMichael, T. E. Williams, Clifford Kimbeli, j. 0. Gaston, Misses Ollie Cole and Maggie Godsey. County Line: J. T. Edalgo, Misses Tenella and Trenton Thurston and Minnie M. Philipps. Jenkinsburg: J. H. Mills, Ar thur and Carl Bankston, . Grover Harris and Hunter Manning. Worthville: Misses Mary and Elizabeth Fincher. School News Ammons Knowles is kept away from school on account of his mother’s illness. Littie Sara Plunkett is on the sick list. Anna Mary Powers was absent two days of the past week from school. Miss Arden had to leave school at second recess on account of sickness. The children were sorry to learn Monday morning that Prof. Lanier was sick and would be unable to teach. Mr. F. A. Holtzhausen gave the school a very interesting talk Monday morning in the auditor ium. GOODY’S DISTRICT On the morning of May sth, I was planting cotton, and I looked across the field and saw a very neatly dressed man coming toward me, and when he came up behold, it was my old friend, W. D. R. Norris. After a hearty handshake he told me he had taken a few days off from his business in Atlanta, to mix and mingle with friends in Butts county, and view the scenes around his old home. I was working in what was called by his uncle, Stephen W. Price, the old “shanty field.” He said he wanted to visit the identical spot where he first went to school, and we were then within one hun dred yards of the spot. The old house is long since gone, but when I showed him the sink in the ground where the well had been, he looked down upon it for a moment, then raised hi eyes and viewed the landscape o’er— we were on a commanding emin nence—he looked across the hills and his eyes rested on his old homesteads The scene was dramatic. As an expression of veneration came over his face, he repeated these words which were as eloquent as any that ever Liberty: B. Y. and L. T. Thax ton, W. J. Smith. Mount Vernon: M. D. Garr. ADJOURNMENT FOR NOON. The afternoon was occupied by the election of officers. President, Joe Ham. Vice Pres. Jim Mills. Sec. Van Wilhite. On motion of J. M. McMichael the convention was voted on to be held at Stark on the first Fri day in May, 1909. After which we had several interesting talks from various Sunday school workers of the county which was very interest ing. Rev. Dodson of Forest Park, was with us and gave a talk which was of much interest. On motion the convention adjourned# Joe Ham, Pres. J. 0. Gaston, Sec. Protem. fell from the lips of Shakespeare or Burns; “How clear to my heart are the scenes of my childhood, When fond recollections present them to view; The orchard, the meadow, the deep tangled wildwood; And every loved spot that my Infancy knew." He then told me to go back to planting cotton, for he wished to walk alone through the woods and spend the next three or four hours by living 50 years in the past, and hear the murmur of the creek and branches as their waters rushed over the rocks and rippled through mossy banks, as in the days of yore. He told me he would take dinner with me, and at 12 o’clock, he came in from his pensive meditation in the fields and woods around his old home. After dinner we sat on the veranda and talked of various things. He inquired about all of his old war comrades in this part of the country, and also told me a thrilling war story in these words. ‘‘l was at the battle of Gettysburg, and was the courier for General Pender, who supported Pickett’s corps in that memorable charge, and in one hundred yards of the enemy’s breast works. My horse was killed under me, an animal which I gave SBOO for.” He then con sulted his watch and said it was time for me to go to planting cotton and time for him to go.
