All roads lead to Jackson Christ mas. Now for street cars for Jack son next summer. Let us all unite in wishing the weather man a Merry Christmas. Cook and Peary seem to have been lost in the prosperity rush. Jackson is well supplied with preachers and has a good school. You ought to feel proud of them. The South is now producing 800,000,000 bushels of grain a year and it is free from pellagra. Govington has organized a cot ton mill. Covington is a good town and deserves to go forward. The Nashville, Ga., Herald is one of the best papers in the state and Nashville is one of the best towns. Troup county claims to have cotton ten feet high. It is not so high here but produces wonder fully well. City council is going to hang up its official stocking for anew depot. Will the Southern please take notice ? Butts county ought to have two representatives in the legislature by the next census. She is enti tled to them. “What is spiked punch?” is a question that is worying some of the editors no little. If Glessner of the Griffin News, Stovall of the Savannah Press or Pendleton of the Macon Telegraph cannot give some information on this we pass it up. BUTTS COUNTY PROGRESS, JACKSON, GA., FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, IWt. ABOUT OBITUARIES. In the future the Butts County Progress will not publish obitua ries, resolutions of respect, etc., free. Our reasons for doing this is simply a matter of business. The newspaper does more chari ty, spends more time and money for charity, than any other enter prise in the community. But there is a limit to all things. A man dies. The* physician and nurse who attended him in his last illness expect to be paid. The undertaker who performed the last sad rites wants some thing for his services. But the newspaper is expected to print long labored resolutions and an cient poetry—free. This does not and cannot pay printers and the wear and tear on machinery. Why not ask the physician to lop off his bill? Why not ask the undertaker to do his work free? Because their services are worth more and it doesn’t cost much to print a notice, you will say. This i > true, as far as it goes. But it and *es cost something to set up t'.iese notices, the paper does cost something, the wear and tear of the machinery is worth some thing. A thing that is worth anything is worth something, and on this basis we intend to operate regards these notices in the future. This editorial is general. We hope nobody will be offended. Pull for Jackson or pull out. How does the Y. M. C. A. idea strike you? The city needs aY. M. C. A. and the state organiza tion will help us to get one. Line up. This has been Jackson’s great est year in building. Just a lit tle more public spirit and she will break her own record next year. It is claimed that Georgia has raised eight million more bushels of corn than she did last year This begins to look like living at home. Jackson grows in spite of it self. What could be accomplish ed if the people would get to gether and put their shoulders to the wheel? Cotton is not thing that is high. The cost of living is going up all the time, live stock, horses and mules, are out of sight. Cotton is not high enough. Governor Brown drawn into a controversy. In this he is wise; what’s the use entering into a newspaper con troversy with Newt Morris? Forsyth boasts of bunk deposits of $247,380. Jackson’s banks have nearly twice that much on j deposit but then Jackson is sev ! eral years ahead of Forsyth in all lines. It is said that the railroads of the United States will have to spend two billion dollars in the next ten years to furnish accom modations for the growing traffic. Jackson will be satisfied, for the present, with anew depot, though, of course, later on she wants the benefits of double tracking, which the Southern is doing in several states. Good roads for everybody. Pull for Jackson or pull out. The case of two of Atlanta’s school children marrying is only another evidence of the fast pace set by that city. Now they are talking of put ting sardines up in cotton-seed oil instead of olive oil. This may cause the Book worm. This winter is a good time to have that new depot. The South ern ought to do that much for the best town on its line. Waynesboro has been enter taining the South Georgia Con ference this week. This is truly the convention season. You should feel proud of Butts county’s schools. She now has more college men at the head of her schools than ever before. If the hook worm had not been discovered some men would nev er have known what was the matter with them. A lucky find. Jackson has had a great year in the building line. $75,000 to SIOO,OOO having been spent in new buildings and improvements. A few more years like that v/ill place her where she belongs. The value of the South’s cotton crop this year will be close to $1,000,000,000, or twice as much as the output of all the gold mines in the world for the same year. Watch the South. Watch Jack son and Butts county. If the Masonic lodges in Jack son would take what they spend annually in rents and apply it to a building fund they could soon own their own home and have a good investment besides. Of the three miilion-dollar bond issue proposed by Atlanta fifty thousand dollars of that amount is to establish crematories. We knew Atlanta was a scorcher but now she is getting ready to burn them—the dead ones. Strange some people never make mistakes. We have a few of this cali ber in Cornelia. The printerman is the only varmint who lays himself liable. The rest are all innocent. —Yonah Land Enterprise. All living, thinking, breathing human beings make mistakes. Only the perfect are immune. Audrey are dead. The Georgia and Florida Rail wayhas been opened,giving direct from August.! toMadi- PPi. Fla., via Millen, Vidalia and Hazlehurst. This railroad goes through one of the best sections in the state. Why can’t Jackson have another railroad*and there by secure cheap freight rates?
