If you are not a booster you are perhaps a buster. Make 1910 mean something for Jackson and Butts county. Jackson and Butts county are just coining into their own. Watch the development that will take place here during this year. Jackson and Butts county are setting the pace for surrounding counties and cities. We are growing so fast the slow ones wonder how it is done —public spirit is the word. Now for a year of growth, pro gress and prosperity and civic improvements in many lines. New buildings, new entei*pris es, a new' hotel, anew depot, a city clean and beautiful the 1910 slogan. Living at home for our far mers, better schools for our coun ty, united effort for our city, a new year’s resolution. CARLOAD OF AUTOMOBILES FOR NEW BUIGK AGENCY G. E. Mallet & Cos., who have secured the agency for the Buick automobile in this territory, re ceived last week a carload of these machines. They are stored in the repository of the Carmi chael Buggy Company. These cars are a well known make and very popular. In point of service and durability the Buick car has few superiors. The cars are the latest models. It is expected that several sales will be made by this company within the next few weeks and | a large number before the year is out. I butts COUNTY PROGRESS, JACKSON. GA.. FRIDAY. JANUARY 14. 1910. WHAT OF THE NEW YEAR ? The year 1910 is fraught with promises of many good things for Jackson and the county of Butts. Cast year was a good one from every viewpoint; much development toon place, Jack son grew at an un-heard of rate, new buildings wentup. Butts county made a good crop which sold for good prices, many new buildings were erected and still more old ones were remoueled. It was such a year of growth and development and expansion as this county and city has seldom seen. . Tne new year should be made even greater and the indica tions are favorable for new records to be established. “is year was ushered in with new contracts and new buildings. Jack sun is coming to be a town of modern stores and ouuaings and handsome residences. It has the opportunity ot )emg tne prettiest residence city in the whole state, me .substantia residences, barns and farm houses of our farmers speak a pros perity and public spirit that is peculiar to this county. There are many things Jackson ought to accomplish this year. She started the new year off right by new buildings. New enterprises seern almost within tne grasp of the people. * n it is the new enterprises that will make Jackson the best town in the state. A certain number of industries are indispensibie to the growth and welfare of a city. Big pay-rolls mean neu ter business for our merchants and banks; new enterprises mean a market for the produce of our farmers. During the year our people should unite on the trolley line and resolve to have it. More transportation facilities are bad ly needed. Nothing would help quite so much as cheaper freight rates. There is enough local capital to build a trolley from here to Indian Springs and Griffin. Let our people de termine to do things for themselves and not wait upon others to do it all for us. The city cannot afford to miss cheap water power rates. No town in the state has such opportunities as has Jackson. We ■ ,uat have cheap electric power for the city and for the new e. erprises that are already here and that will come. A good hotel, a modern hostelry, one that is in keeping with lae progressive spirit of the city is needed it will be the city s best advertisement. * We have promise of anew passenger and freight depot dur ing the year. This is a thing every man and woman should pull for. The best town on the Southern Railway between Atlanta and Macon cannot afford to longer do without a station. There are many other ways in which our town and county can be improved. Co-operation and public spirit will accom liah much. Let us all get together and make this tne greatest year our town and county has aver known. Make Greacer Jackson and Greater Butts county the watch word and the rallying word and let public spirit be the key note of all our efforts. THE POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT. The great deficit in the postoffice department if not the cause for alarm, certainly is the cause for serious reflection. The ex ample of the government running a department at a loss of more than $17,(XX),000 a year is not a worthy one to set'for the individual citizen. There his been an effort to put this blame for this deficit on the rural free delivery of mails and the rate charged newspapers. It seems that the real cause is the abuse of the franking privilege and the favoritism shown by the re publicans from a political standpoint. The New Orleans Daily States has the following to say on the subject: “If Taft and Hitchcock art; sincere in their professed desire to make the postoffice department enm financial dividends for the government, t.hcv must understand they '■an do so only at the sacrifice ot the politi cal dividends which they ■ e nov, reaping from it. In other words, they w ill have to reduce the conduct, of the department to a business basis, conduct it upon the strictest sort of business principles, and cut out politics, favoritism and graft. The strongest business house in the world would inevitably go to the wall were it conducted along such wasteful arid unbusinesslike lines as obtain in the administration of the postofTiee department. “The troops of salary -grabbers who are holding on by virtue of favor itism, to pay political debts and often for even less creditable purposes, ought to be turned adrift; the enormously expensive franking privi leges should abolished, s > that the people would know exactly what it costs them to conduct each department of their public service; anew and honed system of determining the cost of transporting the mails ought to l>e adopted and a parcels post syseem, tlie e. ~t of which w ould lx* based upon distance, should lie introduced.
