MADDOX 46 37 21 137 16 31 24 16 80 48 464 In the state primary Tuesday a:-Governor Hoke Smith won o ver Governor Joseph M. Brown. Mr. Smith carried approximately SI counties to Mr. Brown's 61 and will will go into the convention with 9 majority of about 80 votes. His popular majority will bo very small. The result in Butts county in the governor’s race was a great surprise and Smith carried the county bv a good majority. J. Threatt Moore won for rep resentative by a good majority. Judge Daniel carried this coun- JACKSON, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1910 ty with votes to spare and won over the circuit. Bloodworth had a good lead in Butts but Bartlett seems to be a winner over the district. He carried Bibb, Baldwin, Jones, Upson and late reports state he carried Pike, while Bloodworth GRAND JURY RECOMMENDS THAT WE WORK CONVICTS ON PUBLIC ROADS WOULD KNOW THE NAMES OF ALL TAX DEFAULTERS Grand Jury Recommends A Number of Things in General Presentments for August Term of Butts Superior Court—Wants to Know What Has Become of That Three Thousand Acres of Land—Vote to Place Convicts on Our Public Roads Beginning on The First of January of Next Year. We, the Grand Jury drawn and sworn for the August term 1910 Butts County Superior Court, beg to submit these our general presentments: We, through our various com mittees, have examined the books of all our county officers, and so far as we are able to ascertain in the limited time given us, find that their books are neatly and properly kept as the law directs. The ordinary, clerk of superior court and sheriff report to us that no county funds have passed through their hands since the February term 1910. We find upon examination of tax books that there is existing a decrease of three thousand eight hundred eighteen (3818) acres of land as shown by the consolidated returns of 1909 and 1910 and we recommend that our County Commissioners investigate the san e. We find about one hundred ninety (190) registered voters on registration list, subject to poll tax, whose names do not appear on tax digest. We further find an increase of $130,919 of prop erty over the taxable property of 1909. We find the public roads in good condition, except north Jackson and Worthville districts. We recommend the using of Butts county’s convicts upon the public roads of Butts county for 1911, beginning January first. We re commend that the commissioners establish a road leading from railroad crossing near Mr. Sam Thurston’s residence on right hand side of Southern Railway coming toward Jackson, to inter sect public road at railway cross ing on the Reese Thaxton farm. We have examined our pension list and do not find anyone draw ing a pension who is not entitled to the same. We find at th e county farm one white and three colored inmates. We find about twenty-acres plan ted in cotton, eighteen acres planted in corn, five acres in for age, one acre in potatoes, one and one half acres in sorghum cane, and all in good condition; also two mules, three cows, two of which are giving milk, three hogs, all in good condition. We carried Monroe, Henry, Fayette and Butts. Flynt carried Spald ing. Maddox won for county school commissioner by safe majority. It will require the official count to determine some of the winners for state house officers. The election passed off without disorder here and reports state it was quiet over the state. Bring in SI.OO and get all the happenings in Butcs County one year. Butts County Progress. further find about thirty bushels of wheat, five bushels of corn, five hundred pounds of fodder, and one hundred pounds of meat; also one two-horse wagon, one mbwing machine, one rake, plen ty of farming tools. We find the farm and, premises well kept by Mr. Ilortier Harris, the superin tendent. We recommend that the per diem of jufftrs and bailff's be the same as heretofore. We recommend that our tax re ceiver furnish the' tax collector with a complete list of all tax payers who failed to make cheir returns. We recommend that the Geor gia Construction Compajiyfte re quired to clean out thoroughly all their reservoirs above their dam on Ocmulgee river before the water is turned on. Upon an examination of the justice’s of the neace and notarie’s public dockets we find that same are negilgent in placing upon their records the amount of costs. We recommend that these pre- sentments be placed upon the minutes of the court and also be published in the two local pa pers and that said papers be paid SIO.OO each for same. We extend our thanks to his Honer, Judge E. J. Reagan, for his able charge and courtesies extended this body and express to him our sincere regrets that he declines to longer occupy the bench as Judge of Flini Circuit and wish for him a long and use ful life; also our Solicitor Gener al, J. W. Wise, for his aole assis tance in ferreting out crime and for the many courtesies shown us. We extend to Mr. Matt Bar ber our thanks for his faithful and efficient service as our bailiff.
