FIRE DEPARTMENT IS PUT IN FIGHTING TRIM Important Meeting Held in The City Hall on Wednesday Night For the purpose of reorganiz ing the Jackson Fire Department a meeting was held in the City Hall Wednesday night at 7:30 o’clock. There have been so many fire alarms recently that it was decided best to reorganize the department and get in better fighting trim. The city has promised to buy another reel, which will doubt less be stationed near the depot and lumber yards, where fire could do a good deal of damage in a short time. Two reels will be left up town, where the ma jority of the members of the de partment gather as soon as the alarm is given. Mr. J. R. Thurston was elected Captain of Reel No. 1, and Mr. J. E. McNair Captain of Reel No. 2. They will appoint their nozzlemen and other assistants. The Chief of Police, by virtue of his office, is Chief of the Fire Department also. J. D. Jones was made Secre tary in place of J. P. Etheridge, who has moved to McDonough. The meeting passed a resolu tion asking Council to appropri ate $2.50 for carrying each reel to a fire. The city was also re quested to keep the reels in good condition. Messrs. H. W. Turner and C. M. Compton were appointed to ring the alarm in case of fire. Mr. J. M. Currie was re-elected Treasurer of the Jackson Fire Department. Members absent from meeting will be fined 25 cents. A Com mittee on Absentees was appoint ed by Sheriff L. M. Crawford, who was elected temporary chair- man, consisting of J. M. Currie, H. W. Turner and Jase Maddox. Another meeting will be held next Thursday night at 7 o’clock. Frequent practices will be held by the department, and it will be otherwise strengthened One of the famous barbecues of the Fire Department will be held within a few days. DR. EAKES WILL HOLD LAST QUARTERLY CONFERENCE Dr. J. H. Eakes, of Griffin, will preach at the Methodist church here Sunday night, when the last Quarterly Conference this year will be held. Dr. Eakes is just completing four years as Presiding Elder of the Griffin district, and at the com ing session of the North Georgia Conference, to be held in Augusta in November, he will probably be assigned to other fields. This is, therefore, the last time Dr. Eakes will hold conference in Jackson. Dr.' Eakes has been holding conference at other churches in the county this week, having vis ited Jenkinsburg and Flo villa during this trip. He will preach only at night at the Jackson Methodist church. WORK RESUMED ON THE INTERURBAN LINE Work was resumed this week on the Middle Georgia Interur ban Railway. Mr. Parham Smith, secretary of the company, with a few hands, has been doing some work on Third street. On ac count of the scarcity of labor and the demand for cotton-pick ers, work was stopped some two or three weeks ago. Mr. Smith states that he will begin work Monday with a large force of hands, and that the line will be pushed as rapidly as pos sible. A considerable portion of Third | street has already been graded ; and ties and rails have been laid about half the distance from the depot to the court house square.
