Jackson, Ga., Friday, Feb. 9, 1912 TO THE CANDIDATES: Those seeking office and wish ing their announcement to ap pear in The Progress will please remember that the charge is $5 cash. Don’t ask us to charge your announcement fee. There is one rule for all. This paper has no favorites in the field. You make a bad start by asking the newspaper to insert your an nouncement on a credit. Chautauqua or no Chautauqua? The ground hog says forty days of winter yet. If advertising is good one time it is good all the time. ' It will not help your business any to get grouchy. Smile and advertise. If you have never tried adver tising, how do you know that it doesn’t pay? Competition should be mutual, co-operative. Any other kind is merely opposition. The State Convention of the Farmers’ Union will be held in A aeon next week. Patronize home industries. Ev erybody preaches this doctrine, but how few practice it. This is.the time the Democrats ought to be pulling together in stead of fighting among them selves. Get a good boost out of your system every now and then. It will help you and do your busi ness good. There has already been enough dis *m sion to make several crops of cotton. But how little has been done! Congress is grinding away and the “dear people” are being gra ciously remembered by a liberal supply of garden seed. There is a great future for Butts county in the live stock and poultry business. These beat cotton all to nieces. Every booster for his town and county is a patriot. If you get your daily bread out of Jackson, then talk and boost the town. Don’t wait for opportunity to knock at your door. There are plenty of opportunities right here at home. Get busy at something useful. You will come to Butts county sooner or later. Why not come now anu grow up with the county and help to develop its wonderful resources? Jackson has a big opportunity before her. She must -use her cheap electric power to good ad vantage. How about some new enterprises? The people of Butts county are making a determined effort to have the pond of the Central Georgia Power Company 'de clared a nuisance. By all means, Butts county should have a Live Stock and Poultry Association. Let’s get something started that will turn the people away from the all cotton idea. It is said the Hon. If this be true, suppose he will not canvass the northern part of the State at all. Is Jackson going to have a Chautauqua this year? Let the people express themselves on this subject. It is useless to try to give them something they do not want. On the other hand, if they want a Chautauqua, it can doubt less be made a splendid success. mmm Biases death Of W. 0. THOMPSON Friends here and elsewhere throughout the county * were pained to learn of the death of Mr. W. B. Thompson, which oc curred Tuesday afternoon at 1:20 o’clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. E. C. Cawthon, in Jackson. The disease gained such a headway that'medical skill was unable to overcome it, and the end had been expected for the last day or two, and did not come as a surprise. Mr. Thompson, who was 49 years of age, was one of the best known citizens in the county. He had a pleasant and agreeable manner and made friends easily. For some time past he had been in business in Jackson, and had only recently disposed of his holdings in the Pure Food Mar ket. Mr. Thompson made his home with his sister. Surviving the deceased are a brother, Mr. J. H. Thompson, and one sister, Mrs. E. C. Caw thon, both of Jackson; four nephews, Messrs. L. A., Oscar, W. H. and A. F. Cawthon. The funeral was held at Sardis church, Henry county, Wednes day, and was largely attended. In their bereavement the family have the sympathy of a large number of friends. Lester, who has been connected witl Carmichael-Mallet Company as sales manager for the past sev eral .months, has resigned ■' travel for Isaac Prouty & Cos of Boston. Mr. Lester will stih retain his interest in Carmichael- Mallet Company, and left Wed nesday for New York to make the spring purchases for that firm. He will travel the states of Alabama, Mississippi and Lou isana. Mr. Lester has many friends here, who, while they regret to see him leave Jackson, wish him the best of success in his new field. Mr. A. F. Whit ney, of Atlanta, has purchased an interest in Carmichael-Mallet Company, and will take the place held oy Mr. Lester.
