WILL 6IVE SCHOLARSHIPS IN AGRICULTURAL COLLE6E President Finley, of the South ern Railway Company, has an nounced that as a means of sup plementing the work being done by the Southern Railway and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway for the advancement of agriculture in the territory trav ersed by these lines, it has been decided to give scholarships in the State Agricultural College at Athens. Mr. Finley will take this mat ter up with President A. M. Soule, of the Agricultural Col lege, asking him to permit the companies to pay for the schol arships and select the young men to be benefitted by them. The scholarships are to be given in accordance with plans to be agreed upon by the president of the college and the railway com panies, and are to be given to young men residing in counties traversed by the lines of these companies. The plan is intended to help young men who would otherwise be prevented from ob taining an agricultural education. Full details of the plan will be announced later. It is likely Butts county will be awarded one of these scholar ships. J. T. ATKINSON OUT FOR TAX COLLECTOR fc The seventh announcement, to date, for Tax Collector came this week when Mr. J. T. Atkinson got in the running. Mr. Atkin son was formerly in business in Jackson, has an experience of several years as collector for dif ferent Jackson firms, and is qual ified to perform the duties of the office. He states he has encour aging assurances of support from many sections. Mr. Atkinson a well-known citizen of Buttrill district, and his candidacy wiji add spice to an already exciting race. AGEO LADY DIES FROM BURNS RECEIVED MONDAY Mrs. Caroline Holifield died Monday night at 10 o’clock from the effect of Burns received that afternoon while alone at her home a few miles from Jackson. Mrs. Holifield was 86 years of age, and lived alone near Bar nett’s Mill. While standing be fore an open fireplace Monday her clothing caught and she was so severely burned that death resulted a few hours afterwards. She was a member of a promi nent family of Butts county. Mrs. Holifield was a sister of the late Col. J. L. Barnett. She was twice married, first to J. B. Holifield, who died several years ago, and to Mr. John Cargiie. She is survived by two children, Mr. J. B. Holifield, of this coun ty, and Mrs. Emily Rickertson, of South Georgia. The funeral was held at Macedonia Tuesday afternoon. SEVERAL SALES MADE PUBLIC SALES DAY Two pieces of real estate and some personalty were sold here Tuesday at public sales day. W. W. Ammons, as guardian, sold a house and lot on Walker street in Jackson to J. H. Stroud for SBSO. This is considered cheap for this property, L. P. Watkins and C. G. Mer ritt, administrators, sold forty acres of land in Indian Spring district. Crawford sold four bales of cotton for 7 5-16 cents. This was bid in by Lamar Etheridge. Thirty-one hundred and ten pounds of cotton seed was bought by J. M. Gaston for 85 cents per hundred. There was a fair-sized crowd attending these sales, but the bidding was not very lively. JENKINSBURG. Mr. J. H. Mills was a recent visitor to Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Jolly spent Saturday at Stark. Mr. D. A. Asbury was a visitor to Jackson Saturday. Col. H. M. Fletcher, of Jackson, spent several days in Jenkinsburg recently. Messrs. J. J. Wicker and Otis Walls vere visitors to Jackson Thursday. Messrs. John Capps and Thur man Bowden were visitors to Griffin Friday. Mr. J. M. Bowden, who has been in Atlanta several weeks, has returned home. Mr. Henry Crumbly, of At lanta. has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Johnson. Mr. Luther Pentecost, of Ma con, was the guest Sunday of Mr. Homer Manning. Mr. Homer Manning, of At lonta, was the guest of hi * moth er, Mrs. P. W. Manning, Sunday.
