SKYWARD GOES THE COST LIVING Corn was selling for sl.lO a bushel in Jackson this week. This is the highest figure known for the cereal in some time. Oats went up to 73 1 a bushel this week. The price of meat is up correspondingly. On account of weather condi tions the acreage in oats planted last fall is smaller than usual. In the face of all these facts it appears the people of Butts coun ty will plant the largest corn crop in the history of the county. The outlook for the man who lives out of a paper sack this year and expects to pay for it all out of cotton is not reassuring. DEATH CALLED MR. F. W. GILMORE FRIDAY Long And Useful Career of Prominent Citizen Ended by Death Mr. Francis W. Gilmore was born March 14, 1835 and died just at the close of day April 12, 1912. The funeral was held at the Methodist church at Jenkins burg. Touching and beautiful remarks were made by Rev. Mr. Harper. It would be hard to overesti mate the gifts or grace of this model man. But for long years of sickness he would doubtless have been heard in the State and maybe in the Nation.' Above all he was a deeply religious man, liberal to his church and every good cause. No man will be missed more than he in his church and native town. He died in the full assurance of faith in Christ. Mr. Gilmore was a Confederate veteran, having been among the thousands who went to the front to fight for the South. He ihad suffered for years with cancer, and his death while not unexpec ted, came as a shock to his fami ly and a large circle of friends. He was in his 77th year at the time of his death. Surviving Mr. Gilmore are his wife, Mrs. F. W. Gilmore, three brothers, Messrs. Wiley Gilmore, of Texas, Robert Gilmore, of Monroe, Willis Gilmore, of Griffin; four daughters, Mrs. W. S. Col vin, Mrs. M. R. Walls, Mrs. J. W. Ghilds, Miss Ida Gilmore; two jsons, Messrs. J. H. Gilmore and J. G. Gilmore. The pallbearers were Messrs. Henry Gilmore, J. G. Gilmore, M. R. Walls, Otis Walls, J. W. Childs, W. S. Colvin. A Grandchild. TOO ONE-SIDEO TO BE INTERESTING IN IRON SPSS. That Hon. Oscar W. Under wood, is strong in Butts county is shown by the statements of lead ing citizens from all parts of the county. Hon. C. A. Pittman was in the city Monday morning from Iron Springs and when ask ed about the political situation down his way said: “It is too one-sided to be in teresting. Everybody is all one way and we can’t have any fun out of it this year. Underwood and Slaton will carry everything in our section.” Similar reports come from all portions of the county, and the indications point to an Under wood victory in Butts on the first of May.
