NEWS OF INTEREST IN THE Young Ladies’ Auxiliary. A business meeting of the Young Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Baptist church was held Monday afternoon with Mrs. R. J. Car michael. Miss Lillie McClure was elected to fill the secretary’s place caused by the resignation of Miss Jane Ham. The Associ ated Charities, conducted under the auspices of the Auxiliary, decided to have an ice cream fes tival on the lawn of Mrs. R. J. Carmichael’ s'residence next Tues day afternoon and evening. Be ginning at four o’clock cream will be served and in the even ing after commencement exer cises at the college are over. The proceeds will go to the Mississippi flood sufferers and the public is invited. In Honor of Mrs. Powell. Complimentary to Mrs. Jack Hanson Powell, of Newnan, the lovely guest of Mrs. R. P. New ton, Miss Mary Newton enter tained two tables of Bridge on Thursday afternoon at her pret ty suburban home, Westlawn. Although informal, it was one of the prettiest affairs planned for Mrs. Powell during her visit here. A dainty salad course and ices were served at the card tables after the games. Mrs. Newton Entertains For Mrs. Powell. Among the delightful affairs of the week was the afternoon party at which Mrs. R. P. New ton entertained today for her charming sister, Mrs. J. H. Powell, of Newnan. The large, deep porch with its growing plants made an ideal setting for the group of Bridge players. Large crystal bowls filled with roses shading from pink to deep red gave the necessary touch of color to the scene. A dainty course of refreshments followed the games and were served on the porch also. Invited to meet Mrs. Powell were: Mesdames A. T. Buttrill, E. D. Tolleson, T. H. Buttrill, A. H. Carmichael, R. Mrs. Maurice Wright gave a lovely party on Tuesday evening for her attractive guest, Miss Helen Dunn, of McDonough. The guests enjoyed “500” which was played in the reception hall and living-room, in which the decorative color scheme of pmk and white was carried out. Lit tle Misses Anna Rosa Wnght and Elizabeth Carroll served refresh ing punch in the dining-room Mrs. Wright wore white mull with overdress of Chantilly lace. Miss Dunn was gowned in pmk chameuse with lace trimmings. Ices and cake in pmk and white were served late in the evening. Student Recital. The recital given by Miss Ruth Willis graduate in expression. Tuesday evening was thorough Or enfoved Miss Lamer, who as a"tedher, gave several piano se lections. SOCIAL REALM Sunday School Picnic. The Sunday schools of Jackson will have a union picnic at Indian Spring on Thursday, May 30th. All the business houses of the city have agreed to close for the day and it is expected the outing will be largely attended. PERSONAL ■ Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Carter an nounce the birth of a son. Miss Viola Slaughter leaves Tuesday for Chattanooga to visit friends. Mrs. W. D. Jolly and little son, Palmer, visited relatives here Tuesday. Paul Carmichael and Linton Hopkins were visitors to Atlanta Tuesday. Mrs. W. D. Compton spent this week with Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Compton. Asa Burford was up from Brunswick this week for a visit with homefolks. Miss May Collier, of St. Louis, is the charming guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Carter. Miss Thelma Wood is at home from a visit in Macon, Hawkins ville and Cochran. Cols. J. T. Moore, W. E. Wat kins and C. L. Redman spent Tuesday at Thomaston. Miss Exie Ham enjoyed the past week in Macon, the guest of Mrs. C. W. Springer. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Wood and Dr. and Mrs. R. W. Mays were recent visitors to Macon. Captain George Haines, of Augusta, was the week-end guest of Mr. George Mallet. Miss Maggie Manley will come home tonight from Douglasville, where she has been teaching. Mr. Green Lassiter, of Hope, Ark , was the recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. McKibben. Misses Vera and Jessie Jones and Mr. H. G. Knott are spending the week at Stark with relatives. Dr. R. Van Deventer left Mon day for Oklahoma City to attend the Southern Baptist Convention. Miss Claire Monroe returned this week to Quincy. Fla., after a fortnight’s visit with Mrs. T. M. Furlow. Little Aldine Maddox sustain ed a broken arm this week when he was thrown from a wagon by his pet goat. Mrs. Jack Hanson Powell, of Newnan, is the guest of Mrs. R. P. Newton and is being delight fully entertained. Mrs. J. H. Kinard is at home from Atlanta and is greatly im proved in health, her friends will be glad to learn. Miss Lillian Harkness returned Saturday to Valdosta, after a week spent with her parents Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Harkness. Judge and Mrs. Paul Turner and little daughter, of McDon ough. were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Etheridge. Messrs. A. T. Buttrill and T. B. McMichael attended the BUTTS COUNTY PROGRESS. Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias meeting in Augusta this week. Mr. S. H. Thornton is in Au gusta for several weeks and Mrs. Thornton is with relatives in Macon and Grays during his absence. Miss Annie Lou McCord spent from Friday until Monday in La- Grange. During her absence Mrs. J. M. Currie had charge of her classes at school. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Carmi chael, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Car michael, Miss Minnie Bailey and Frank Carmichael motored up to the Gate City Tuesday. Prof. W. V. Lanier, of Millen, who attended the County Offi cials convention at Indian Spring this week, was the guest of his brother, Prof. W. R. Lanier Sun day. Mr. W. H. Shelton, president and Mr. W. S. Johns, secretary of the Mutual Life Industrial As sociation, of Athens, were busi ness visitors to the city this week. Through a mistake in making out the honor roll for April, the names of Annie B. Gibson, Eth el Colvin and Helen Barnes were omitted from the list of the sth grade pupils. His friends will regret to learn that Mr. J. K. Sitton, manager of the power plant, had hfs ankle broken by being struck with an engine Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to a sanitarium in Macon. CITY SCHOOLS HAVE ARRANGED PROGRAM FOR COMMENCEMENT The last examination will be held Friday morning in the pub lic schools of the town, and on Sunday morning the commence ment exercises will begin. It was hoped that State Super intendent Brittain would be present on the night of the graduating execises to address the members of the senior class, but other engagements hindered him from accepting the invita tion tendered. On Monday night an admission fee of fifteen and twenty-five cents will be charged as usual on the night of this entertainment. This is done in order to meet cer tain expenses that are neccessary at commencement time. Branson of Atlanta, will preach this sermon, and the congregations of the town are requested to be present on this occasion. Everybody has a cor dial welcome. On Monday night the pupils of Miss Lanier’s music class will give the annual concert prepared by this depart ment. The art pupils of Miss Anna Keith will have their pictures on exhibition in the art room of the school building, on Saturday af ternoon May 18th from 4-30 to 6 o’clock.
