Yancey, marshal at Helena and a former citizen of Butts county, was killed in a pis tol duel with a negro named Harry Finch, who in turn was killed by the officer, Monday night. Marshal Yancey received a telegram at midnight to arrest the negro, accused of shooting a deputy sheriff in Jacksonville, Fla., recently, and when he com manded the black to halt he was shot through the heart by the negro. Mr. Yancey drew his pistol and shot* the negro six times, all the shots taking effect. The body of the negro, who was known as a “bad nigger.’V was burned Tuesday by the en gaged citizens of Helena. .' Mr. Yancey was the son of Mr. Villiam Yancey, who moved to’ south Georgia several years ago. 'Besides his parents he is surviv ed by his wife and three small children, four sisters, Mrs. J. T. McClure, Mrs. C. B. Hodges, of Butts county, Mrs. Riley Mason, •f Henry county, Mrs. Marv Gresham, of South Carolina; two brothers, Messrs. Arthur and Dude Yancey. Much regret is felt here by of the family oyer the | unfortunate tragedy. Marshal Yancey was to have ? retired from office Tuesday after noon. Table No. 2. That was for some school warrants. Time was when Jackson did not stand very high in financial circles. However, the present administration has succeeded, by rigid economy, in paying all in debtedness and at the same time reducing the tax rate materially. A few years back it was nothing for the city to pay S2OO and more for interest. Jackson’s financial condition is the very best and she faces the new year with the brightest prospects in her entire history.
