BAPTIST MEETING CLOSES THIS WEEK Revival Has Been Entire Success MANY JOIN THE CHURCH Dr. Pickard Has Deeply Impressed The People of The Community By His Able Preaching Tonight will probably mark the close of the meetings at the Bap tist church. Dr. W. L. Pickard, of Savannah, who has been doing the preaching, will return to his home, he having come to Jack son for a stay of only ten days. Judged by all the well known standards the meeting has been an entire success. A number of accessions have been made to the church, while interest has been alert from the first service. That the spiritual life of the city has been stirred by the able preaching of Dr. Pickard there is no question, and lasting good will no doubt result from his ex pounding of the gospel. Not before in a number of years has greater interest been shown in a revival at the Baptist church. Dr. Pickard’s person ality has strongly impressed the people of the city, regardless of denomination or creed. The dig nified manner in which he has conducted the revival has appeal ed to many. During his short stay in the city Dr. Pickard has made a large circle of very warm friends. This has been his first visit to Jackson, though there are many who will be glad to welcome him to the city at some time in the future. Dr. VanDeventer is undecided as to whether he will continue the meeting a day or two after Dr. Pickard’s departure for Sa vannah. The usual service will be held Sunday, with Dr. Van- Deventer filling the pulpit. MEMORIAL DAY WILL BE FITTINGLY OBSERVED Memorial day in Jackson will be appropriately observed this year by the Daughters of the Confederacy on Saturday, May 2. The program will be out of the ordinary and for that reason of unusual interest. Instead of a set address, talks will be made by a number of veterans. They will tell from their own lips of actual experiences in the war. Judge H. M. Fletcher will also make an address. Other public men will probably deliver talks. The veterans will form on the court house yard and go in a body to the cemetery where the graves of the Confederate dead will be decorated. Upon returning to the city the ladies of the Confederacy will serve dinner to the veterans. Mr. Martin and Miss McCord will attend the Georgia Educa tional Association at Macon Fri day and Saturday. Several other teachers may attend Saturday. Dr. Pickard, who is conducting the revival services at the Bap tist church, gave the school one of the most instructive talks that we have heard during the year, Tuesday morning. SHRINES PROGRAM NOW COMPLETE The Date Fixed For May Uth to 14th THOUSANDS ARE COMING Atlanta Will Entertain The Greatest Convention in Her History—3o,ooo Vis itors Are Expedted Atlanta, Ga., April 23.—The official program for the National Shriners gathering here, includ ing the parades and other spec tacular public functions, has just been made public. The gathering will be held May 11 to 14. It will bring over thirty thousand visiting partici pating Shriners here from all parts of the United States and Canada, and in addition will bring thousands of visitors to At- j lanta from Georgia and surround ing states to see the tremendous pageants and the elaborate deco rations. On Monday afternoon April 11 there will be a sweepstakes mo torcycle race at the motordrome. Monday evening at the audito rium will be the grand reception and ball in honor of Imperial Po tentate and Mrs. Irwin. Tuesday morning May 12 the great day parade will take place with over sixty bapfis in line, with camels, gorgeous oriential costumes and such a glitter and noise and brilliancy as no dozen circus parades ever boasted. The night parade, perhaps even more gorgeous and spectacular, will take place the same date, Tuesday evening, May 12. On Wednesday there will be exhibition drills, races and an other grand ball in the evening. On Thursday special parties will be made up to go by auto and by train to visit spots of his torical interest and popular re sorts in Georgia. It is on this day that the special train will go to Tybee. In addition to all this, there .will be ball games at Ponce de Leon park every afternoon dur the Shrine gathering. PICKARD’S VISIT. He greatly pleased the people with his great sermons. Those who met him can testify to his winsome personality. He great ly dignifies the Gospel and makes Religion a divine gift. Our peo ple were highly profited. Those who had wandered from the path of duty came back. Many who had neglected their church rela tion were quickened, and others who were not Christians espoused the cause of the Lord. This spiritual quickening will greatly aid in the big task before us in building for the Lord the new house. INDIAN SPRINGS Mr. and Mrs. Levi Scoville, of Birmingham, Ala., spent last week at the Wigwam hotel. Mrs. W. H. Arnold and Miss Myrtice Arnold have returned home from a delightful trip to Atlanta, Decatur and Lithonia. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Dolvin, of Atlanta, spent Sunday as the guest of Mrs. T. E. Cornell. Miss Lucile Elder has returned from a three weeks visit at Austell. Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Hoard, Miss Louise Smith and Miss Joe Varner motored to Jackson Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cornell, of Albany, will spend the summer season at hotel Elder, where Mr. Cornell will have charge of the office. Mr. W. D.
