The National Guard is the only organized reserve. Combined it can provide a force of 120,000 men, only partly trained, and to put them in the field as an effect ive fighting force will take more than thirty days. You, Mr. Average American, who think that all you have to do is rush in on Monday morning, volunteer, march awav and be at the front not later than the next Sunday, may be surprised to learn that the cloth of the uni form you are to wear is not yet woven, and your gun and ammu nition is not yet manufactrred. You are taking the chance of matching ignorant untrained volunteers against the trained disciplined troops of foreign countries. What will you do Mr. volun teer, against an artilleryman who can drop four out of five shells on any certain acre of ground three miles away.
