Mays’ last letter in regard to the new tax law was much milder and more conciliatory in tone than his first one was. Evidently some kind of anew light is dawning on the doctor’s vision in regard to the new law. We think if he will in vestigate the matter more fully and see how unequal our lands and other property have been re turned in the past he will be com pelled to admit that we need some better method than the old way of getting at fair tax values. In the doctor’s first letter he mentioned the fact that under the old law the return had to be sworn and was subject to review by the grand jury; but we all know that the grand jury would not have the time nor the incli nation to take up this matter. Those who oppose the new law confuse the question of tax equal ization with that of tax reduc tion. which are two separate and distinct propositions. We all agree that the tax rate ought to be held down to the very lowest possible point to meet the legit imate expenses of government, but whether our tax be high or low, we need some method of equalization and we will never j get it under a system that lets each tax payer fix the valuation of the property he returns. Those who oppose this new law ; may think that they can have it repealed and then they can con- j tinue to return their high priced lands and other property at the same valuation of those who have the cheapest lands, but they may not find it such smooth sailing as they think. The discussion caus ed by the new law has informed the people as to the injustice of the old system of getting our property on the digest, all at the same price, regardless of value, and if you repeal the new law you are going to find a lot of people who will kick loud, long and hard against the old farce of letting you return your high priced lands at the same valua tion of that fixed for the very cheapest. You just as well put that in your pipe and smoke it, and think it over seriously and digest it thoroughly before you get in such a hurry to repeal the new law. Right here we would like to ask those who have been return ing their lands worth SSO to SIOO per acre at $6. if you thought that was enough for you to pav on yours? Why have you never raised your voice in protest against the injustice of making the fellow with land worth $lO return his at the same price? If you had ever done so your vigorous protest against any raise of vour tax values now would have come with better grace and would have more weight with those who have been paying five to ten times as much in proportion market value of their lands as you have. FORTY-EIGHT STAND THE TEACHERS’ EXAMINATION Of the forty-eight apnlicants who stood the examination for teachers’ license Friday and Sat urday all but four were females. This would lead one to believe that the gentle sex is monopoli zing the teaching business in this section. Thirty-one white applicants, three men in the number, took the tests. Seventeen colored ap plicants went through the exam ination and of that number all were females but one. This is rather a larger number than usual to take such an ex amination in Butts county. SARAH CHILES DIES AT HER HOME IN MACON Mrs. Sarah Chiles, of Macon, a former resident of this county, died at her home Sunday night at the age of 67. News of her death will be received with re gret by a large number of Butts county friends. Before her mar riage Mrs. Chiles was a Miss Mayo and resided here. She was a sister of Mr. J. M. T. Mayo, of Atlanta, and was a splendid Christian character. Mrs. Chiles is survived by her husband, one son and three daughters, all of Macon, a broth er, Mr. J. M. T. Mayo, of Atlan ta.
